It's magenta in my garden - sort of like Rose de Rescht in color. I wouldn't call it crimson (see the link). Habit is nice, vase shaped. I have not noticed much in the way of hips. When it blooms all along the canes, it almost appears to be pegged.

Fantastic! Thank you mexicanhat. I like magenta, anything that's not really a basic deep pink is okay. I have Roseraie de'Hay and consider it's color to be a cold magenta, I wonder if it's close to that..probably warmer, no? Anyway, that sounds promising for the habit.

I'm interested in the moss clan, are there any others that do really well in the Mid-Atlantic range? I have heard some okay things about William Lobb and I think Nuits de Young, but not much else.

Have you looked at Paul Barden's mosses? I would love to have all of his colorful mosses for my collection.

What about Violacee (an old moss)? I have one from Sequoia, but it's just a wee thing yet. Very smokey-purple.

You've brought up one of my favorite roses..Henri Martin. Mine is as close to disease free as any rose I have in my collection. Mine is only a few years old so far, and it has not gotten the "vase" shape (if I understand the term correctly). Instead it is a more rounded sprawling shrub. The color is more red than the blue of RdlH. I recall that the fragrance is divine. I know I got some hips on this rose because I'm growing some seedlings from him. There is really nothing I do not like about this rose.

I'm growing about 15-20 moss roses, and they are definitely my favorite class of roses.

Very reasonable resistance for me too. Some hips, that look interesting because of som moss on them. Color is different from RdLH, less purple. I really love this moss, lots of blloms, vigor, beautiful young growth. It can be grown as a climber, I think. At least canes are flexible and some ar 8+ feet long. Definitely recommend

Wonderful scent, very hardy, lots of bristly hips and excellent disease resistance. The color is deep pink in my garden. Not red at all. The canes are very long (8-10 feet) and thin, making it a good rose for a pillar.

Interesting about the hips. Mine is off in a spot away from the other roses - it has a couple of young moss bands planted with it - and it hasn't set many hips at all. 4 or 5 hips at most. Cool to know that should improve. I must plant some rose companions that will attract bees to that area.

Other good reds? Nuits de Younge is wonderful-has fabulous foliage too, Etna is a really good dark red that has a really long bloom-nice rounded shurb, Baron de Wassenaer is good and huge too. There is a great climbing single called Goethe. I am waiting for Pélisson-new to me and supposed to be a really good crimson red. The repeating reds like Eugenie Guinoisseau, Mme de la Roche-Lambert, and Deuil de Paul Fontaine tend to spot-sometimes badly.
When I pass Henri Martin I think of the old Ballad about 3 Scots brothers who became Pirates-I love the line about 'All their dear bodies drowned in the salt sea' the English not the brothers...
