I keep it around my pear and plum trees'beings i raise goats and have access to 5 gallon bucket a day.I apply it both ways fresh or aged'it works both ways and will not hurt your trees.i grind it up and apply to my tomatoe plants and water it in works well for me also.im sure other people will have different opinions ;but thats mine

Yes, count me as one of the opposites. Putting fresh manure into soil that grows tomatoes is, in my opinion, great for the tomatoes.....but hardly for the people munching on them.
Same for the trees, if the manure is making contact with the roots of such trees, that can hardly be said it is doing the roots any good.
Much better if the said manure is well composted, then is a very good soil amendment for trees, shrubs, perennials....and even tomatoes.

But then that's my opinion.
Other people might have other ideas, but that's mine.

Yes you can put fresh anything around the drip lines of plants. Fresh manure in moderation. Also don't push it up to the trunk of the tree. I use fresh manures all through out my yard/gardens, never hurt me. My tomato plants are caged to where they are not laying in it. My tree roots are well below soil level so unless you plan on digging out the soil and filling it in with the manure you will be fine. I would put a layer of about an inch around each tree and step back to watch them grow like Jack and Beanstalk.
But then that is my poinion and yes others won't agree. I know what has worked for me in the past, has worked for the people here in the past that I have learned from. I know my grandparents use tons of cow and pig manure in their gardens and anywhere that they felt needed it. I grew up eating produce from their farm, never was sick as a kid. Grandparents lived to their 90's. Just don't eat the manure itself.

I'm in the 'not' camp. Goat manure, like sheep manure, is considered 'hot' (high in N, almost 3%). I'd apply it to fallow gardens in the fall, or compost it before using it.

goat manure has not killed nobody in our family .
been using 30+ years.there 4 stomachs do a good job processing [hay grass feed ect].there urine is full of goodies also.

Goat manure is considered to be a cold manure with about 0.7 percent Nitrogen that is not very readily available, so you could use that to mulch around your trees, but as with all manure it is better to compost it first so the nutrients in that manure are captured in the compost and not liberated to the atmosphere.

Sheep & Goat Manure: Sheep or goat manure is another "hot" manure. It is somewhat dry and very rich. Manure from sheep and goats fed hay and grain will be more potent than manure from animals that live on pasture. It is best to compost this manure before use or add to the garden in the fall.

I can get better satisfaction arguing with a sign post at least it will not talk back; but the truth does hurt some people. for the record i compost goat manure and use fresh. ive got a herd of goats we raise and a overflow of goat manure ive used it for every thing you can think of except food. farmer brown.

Of course you do. I have a herd of pachyderms, myself, but they produce no manure because I don't feed them.

I wonder what John Howard Garrett has to say about composting pachyderms.

I feel a better idea may be to add a nice layer of wood mulch around those trees. Wood mulch will encourage fungi growth which will be of greater aid to the trees more than anything else at this time of year. Of course, the mulch should not be placed next to the trunk of the trees; and will to an extent control grass growth which could rob the tree of nutrients. Not to say the manure will not help, but just what I would do at this time of year...

mt trees are already mulched heavily with cardboard and layers of browns, mostly dried leaves .
i just thought they could use some fertilizer for the winter..

will " a nice layer of wood mulch " act as fertilizer or do i need something with nitrogen in it?

I do use USG as much as I can. However you will get more nitrogen from goat manure. I have a nice thick layer of shredded leaveson my flower beds. On top of the leaves I am now putting on a layer of UCG's. This is the front yard and using stall waste seems to upset a few neighbors. Well as a top dressing, what is under the mulch of leaves they will never know. LOL
I kind of mix the UCGs into the leaves a bit, not sure why but I do like the looks more. Never have an issue with the grounds repelling water if mixed with the leaves.

From the "Minnesota DNR" Minn DNR, come the following reasons for using wood mulch under trees:

Benefits of mulching with wood chips
· Saves Labor - no weeding, less time watering
· Saves Water - far less watering needed, and more rain absorption
· Safer - no need for chemical weed killers or herbicides
· Stimulates growth - mulched trees grow faster than un-mulched trees
· Makes trees more resistant to disease and insects
· Keeps soil and roots from overheating in hot summers
· Eliminates injury to trunk from mower collisions
· Reduces soil compaction over roots and adds loft
· Nourishes the soil by adding nutrients as it decomposes
· Eliminates the need for tilling and resultant root injury
· Reduces bruising of fallen fruit under fruit trees
· Increase earthworm population resulting in better aeration

Again, the use of manure (composted/un-composted) is up to the owner of said trees; although both sites state mulch adds nutrients to the soil. I am not sure weather adding nitrogen at this time of year is advisable or not. I will trust others to guide you with their experience in that regardÂ

Wood mulch is great stuff- but definitely doesn't qualify as a fertilizer. You can read up on old serious debates about whether it in fact robs nitrogen from the soil (anti-fertilizer?).

The general opinion is that adding it to the surface does NOT cause N deficiency, and that digging it into/mixing it with soil may cause an issue.

But it is good, solid research that has shown that mulch does not "rob" the soil of Nitrogen. Opinion only enters the picture when I write the some shrubs that I mulched with wood chips grew 1 foot in the first 3 weeks after I mulched them while others that did not get mulched stayed the same height, something I observed but cannot document.

I meant to say "concensus", but yes- it is proven.

Even if you document something- it says nothing of the controls or repeatbility of the test. (one shrub with and one without- not a great sample size...). I'm sure that you understand it as well as I- but any chance to talk about scientific method is a good thing.
