Are you sure you want to plant roses in the fall? I don't know what your region is like, but in my Zone 6 (Kansas), I would only plant in springtime, and in the case of RU roses, only after all danger of frost has passed--late April or early May, in other words. Maybe even mid-May--I think that was the date RU said was "safe" for their roses.

You could ask them to send the roses at the appropriate time in the springtime.

You will love your RU roses--so big and healthy, and often even blooming when you get them.

Can't comment on your selections--don't grow them--but they are names that often turn up on this forum with high praise.

You don't post where you are, but you should be okay getting your roses in now. Mulch them well for the winter about the 1st of Nov or just let the autumn leaves build up around them. Fallen leaves are mother nature's own mulching system--all we do is mimic her.

Hi Kate and catsrose, I should be fine planting now. I'm in central NY, along Lake Ontario. The lake is a wonderful moderator and the ground seldom freezes under the snow in the winter here. I have planted woodies and perennials(with great success), in every month of the year because of this. I know this is always a gamble, but if I kill them, it is my own fault, lol. Other woodies seem to thrive with late summer planting, and I'm eager to try it. I will mulch with oak leas as well. I do appreciate the advice and warning though!

Frederic M. is classed as a hybrid tea, but it gets twice as tall and wide as a typical hybrid tea, so allow for that.

I am lucky in that I live within driving distance to RU. I went there last summer and bought a bunch of roses. They were incredibly healthy and are all doing great. I think their larger size will make them fine to plant now.

I have Mr. Lincoln, Golden Celebration and Dr. Jamain. I didn't get them from RU though. Mr. Lincoln is one of my older roses. In my zone, it can get very tall, up to 8 feet. So I normally have to cut back the canes when the blooms are done to about 3 feet. It will give you outstanding HT blooms on long stems. Great for cutting and they have a wonderful scent. It does tend to be blackspot prone. I spray.

GC is a great rose, the blooms are very yellow and fragrant. It's more sprawling than Mr. Lincoln, and here I am getting it to grow on an oblisk, but it can probably be kept to a shrub size. It's also BS prone.

I haven't planted Dr. Jamain yet. He's doing well in pot and I am planning a new bed for next spring that he will go in. Fantastic red blooms.

Ohhh!!!! You're going to love, love Jadis!!! What a stellar plant. (Roses here don't usually get any disease). So many fragrant large PINK roses with quick repeat!!! Flowers last a loooong time!!

Jude the Obscure has not been a good rose for me. I've tried it twice. This time I think I overdid it with the compost tea and then Miracle Grow. It's struggling to survive - poor thing. I sure wouldn't get this rose again. But then, LOTS of people just love this rose.

Golden Celebration is a rose I would never do without. It's one of my focal point roses. I love this rose!!! Always seems to be flowers on it. They smell wonderful and last a looong time on the bush.

I don't have any of the others on your list; but you're going to be a happy roser I'm sure!!! Good choices!!!

As for planting now, I would go for it if I were you.

Starina, I live in Southern California, so please have in mind that I can only tell you how these roses are doing in my climate.

That being said, I grow Mister Lincoln, which is a great red rose with an amazing scent. It is a really good cut flower, too. Frederick Mistral is one of my most beloved rose out of nearly 70 rose bushes. Great pink color, strong fragrance and as already stated by michaelg it is very vigorous and gets much larger than my regular Hybrid Teas. I have seen a very pretty Jude the Obscure in a public garden here and the fragrance was too die for. I loved the cupped flower shape and it is a very pretty yellow orange color, very special rose in my eyes.

Thank you Christina! I have loved Mr. Lincoln for at least 20 years. I didn't think he would be happy here, but I am going to give him a try. I'm going to plant the own root clone from RU, and also a grafted plant, tend to them, and see how they do. Fredrick Mistral looks amazing, I hope he's happy here also. Others grow JtO successfully in the area, and other Austins do well here. I look forward to the fragrance!
I read about Jadis here, looked her up on Help-me-Find, and fell in love. I seem to have a preponderance of pink roses, and decided that it's time to start bringing in other colors. Golden celebration seems to be loved by many people here, and is so pretty, I can't resist.
The good Dr. Jumain is such a luscious color, and is growing at least one full zone colder semi locally. What a beautiful rose he is, sigh.. I could go on and on, and I'm sure that it seems I already have, lol. I'm just very excited to be adding these, and other roses in the future.
I've been growing OGR's, various rugosa hybrids, and a few modern shrub roses for quite a while, and I just began trying modern roses last year. They seem to be thriving here. Some where a little rough last year, but look great this summer. I'm learning that attentive and regular watering makes a huge difference, as well as various organic amendments and smallish amounts of organic ferts. I love cutting roses and bringing them in the house, this is the first year I've done this, and cannot imagine what took me so long!

They're here! The roses came today, and luckily, I got home just as they arrived. They were well packed, and look great. I put them in a shady spot and watered well. Any tips? This is the first time I have ordered from RU, and they told me to harden them off before plating out in the sun.
I'm really quite excited about them!

I prefer planting RU or Heirloom roses in the Spring.

I'm in Virginia, on the cold end of zone 7a, and I plant roses any time during the year when the soil is workable. I have been known to pop in a few last roses in early November. Potted roses are a competely different situation than bare roots (which should be spring planted here, for the most part.) Those little roses in pots have been growing there all year, sometimes two years, and it's usually fine to plant them whenever you can. The hard-and-fast rule that we should plant roses in the spring, regardless of where we are, is not accurate.

Your roses from RU should spend a week or so getting used to living in their new climate. Keep them well watered, and gradually move them in their pots from their shady spot into the place where you plan to plant them. After that, pop them in the ground, no fertilizer right now, water and mulch them well, and stand back. Winter protect the ones that are more tender.

Thank you for the advice and reassurance Connie. I have been second guessing myself on planting them in the fall. I plant other woodies any time the ground is not frozen, but was fretting that I may be sentencing the hybrid teas to a certain death.

I grow Souvenir du Docteur Jamain in Northern California and so far I like it. I planted it late last summer and it is coming on very slowly. But I'm willing to wait for it to get comfortable. So far it has only put on a few flower the whole season but is growing straight up with two long, healthy canes. I have it planted in morning sun with diffused light in the afternoon. The flowers are really pretty but small still when it blooms. I'm hoping for big things next year.

You will love your RU roses. They are always a pleasure to deal with.

I did plant a rose from Heirloom the first week of August.
Heirloom own-root roses are smaller than RU's. So, this rose I received was about 5 inches tall and wide.
Then a rabbit ate it to ground level, but, it's coming back. It's about 2 inches high and wide now. lol.
Probably not good odds that it will make it through our winter though.

So, if you have rabbits roaming freely, put some fencing around your young roses to keep them safe.
