I amin the Orlando area and have had the same problem over the past two weeks, but not only with Julia Child. My Love and Peace, Abraham Darby, Lasting Love, in fact almost all of my roses look like that, I think it is due to several days of intensely hot weather which dries the leaves and the buds to a crisp. The more exposed and hotter the area, the more it will show on the roses.
Compared to some of mine your JC does not look at all bad.

The thing is that, in spite of the condition of the leaves, I have lots of buds - even though they fry in one day. That's a hot Florida summer for you!!

Thanks, that's good news. I was concerned that it might not be something temporary. I also thought after I posted this that our pool has been nearly overflowing and we've had to drain some and it goes down the driveway and sits at the end where Julia is. We don't have anywhere else to drain it since there are plants everywhere. But I hope you are right and it is just the intense heat.

I suggest you take a closer look at where your plant has those leaves. I don't think there's anything wrong with your rose, which looks quite healthy. I suspect those are normal senescent leaves.

At a certain point in the growing season, roses that are putting on a lot of new growth will kill off the leaflet below the bud eye where new laterals are growing, as well as some small leaflets at the base of some laterals. Where flowers were borne and the plant not deadheaded a certain way, any 3-leaflet leaves right below the spent bloom will also die as a lower lateral emerges.

I am seeing plenty of those yellow leaves in my garden right now. It's a sign of new growth above. Roses are thrifty and are thought to reabsorb nutrients from their leaves before they drop off. It will fall off on its own, or you can blast it with a hose and it will wash off.

All of the damage is inside the plant, not on the new growth, which looks healthy. It is where you'd see fungus damage even though I spray religiously and generally don't have a problem. So hopefully you are right Berndoodle, she is just sheading.

Hi Nancy,

I had a problem such as you have, and I discovered spider mites. They went right up the middle of the bush. Look at the underside of the leaves and see if there is a salt and pepper like substance and if anything is crawling around. And you might want to look at them under a magnifying glass.

Ramblinrosez, I don't see any black specks or spider mites even with a magnifying glass, just lots of damaged interior leaves. Thanks for the suggestion.
These two roses are the only ones in my garden who have to endure all day sun with no break. I don't know if that is a factor or not.
