Tall cutting roses in weird spot

Hi All,

I have a fence along the side that is 6' high. I currently have pots on a shelf to get above the fence (see pic.) but want to get rid of the pots. Any suggestions for a few roses that will get tall and produce nice roses for cutting. I spray. I don't care about scent. Picture was taken in the evening. It gets good afternoon light. Thanks all.

Traviata will support itself bolt upright to over 8'. I currently have basals of 8', 8', 7', and 6', each with a single bud. It is an excellent cut flower, if you don't object to old-fashioned bloom form. True dark red, no scent, disease resistant.

Frederic Mistral, Folklore, and Queen Elizabeth also come to mind.

I've found "Reine des Violettes" which is smooth-stemmed and has springy supple canes very easy to train. For best bloom, I'd peg it so the canes arch and are pegged to the ground or tied to the lower parts of each cane so that each cane becomes covered with roses. If your area is shaded, I'd choose a white rose to be more visible, and Alba Semi-Plena because it is quite shade tolerant. "Alba Semi-Plena" is my favorite Alba, and I love every part of it, from its' fit-for-a- fairy -tale white roses with gold bosses, and "luxerious" blue-green foliage, that is usually bullet proof against disease. It also bears ornamental red rosehips that are flagon shaped. Altogether a beautiful plant. No re-bloom, however. I use its very attractive foliage all season long in bouquets with other roses and flowers. This would be my first choice for your space. I'd espalier it to fit its' plot so it grows as tall as possibe, c. 5 feet wide and narrow from front to back. "Stanwell Perpetual" is a prickly demon, with angelic flowers, that I love dearly, but I'm planning to move it to a hillside where it can enjoy solitude and cease to rip the hems of my dresses off, when I walk by it. Thanks, Buford and Ann. I guess I'll just dig and hack at the roots the best I can and hope it stays gone -- or that new growth is healthy. Ann, you certainly are welcome to use my photo and descriptioin -- I'm flattered! I sure am heartbroken to lose that rose. I originally bought it because it was described as a climber, but in fact it grew very slowly, and it's lucky I also planted a lilac along that side of the fence. The Aloha would never have spread out and covered it like the New Dawn did the other side (I live in a city neighborhood of ugly chain-link-fenced yards that I was trying to conceal and pretty-up), but after about eight years it had finally grown to about six feet tall and was glorious. So I only had a few years to really enjoy it. And now that spot is going to look bare and ugly.... Thanks again. It's been years since I spent any time on GardenWeb and now I wonder why -- it's such a wonderful place.

Planting clematis on a weird spot

I think it depends on which clematis you are attempting to plant. Smaller clematis are likely to do well. Clematis that demand larger root runs will likely not do well. Whether the run off from your car wash will affect the plant will likely depend on the type of detergent you use--biodegradable vs. some strong grease cutting version.

They are dark brown and can be over 2 inches long and 1 inch wide, excluding legs, antenna, and wingspan. My brother called them flying dates. At one point in his late teens, he worked at the (name redacted) restaurant, the "best" eating establishment in town. The cook said that after turning off the lights one night, he found it necessary to reenter the kitchen and found a cloud of them fluttering around in the kitchen when he turned on the lights. We never patronized this establishment again! They live outdoors as well as indoors, so when you work in the garden, you find them in your planters, bromeliads, orchids, and mulch. My mother had one fly in her face and get tangled in her hair. She was quite traumatized by this episode. No matter how clean you are, the roaches in the yard will send colonizing expeditions into your home. The natives refuse to admit these things are roaches! They call them palmetto bugs and insist they are not related to roaches!

Michaelg, I have Traviata in another spot. It is exactly the growth pattern that I'm looking for. Tall, narrow and mainly top growth.

I am planning to cut a bouqet of Traviata over the weekend and display them in a 20-gallon trashcan. No, wait, I have a nice brass umbrella stand that would be only a little underscaled, if it holds water.

Thanks Nancy, it is so pretty with orange/coral on the top of the petal and pale butter yellow on the back. It growes tall and is healthy for the most part. I guess that is the reason that mine is the third recomendation for it. I have to say that I don't have La Triviata so I can not speak to it.

Just looked in my backyard. The following are over 8-feet tall with uprigth growth habit.

Antigua, Arizona, Bride's Dream, Folklore, Frederic Mistral, Imperatrice Farah, Mr. Lincoln, Royal William, Touch of Class.
Imperatrice Farah has the longest vase life but not as productive as the rest (with the exception of Mr. Lincoln).

My Frederic Mistral starts producing arching rather than upright laterals in early August and sprawling over his neighbors. Is this normal or maybe caused by too little sun? He is upright for the first half of the season.

It is possible Michael. Do you get enough rain? Lot of showers and no sun can lead to that kind of growth on FM.
We, on the other hand, donÂt get rain (3 good soaking rain from May till today) so my FM also produces some weird growth, such as short flower stalks instead the nice long stems I got used to. In other HTs that are not in full sun I noticed that they developed horizontal or arching laterals during hot and cloudy days that lasted sometimes for a week or longer but without these clouds giving us a drop of rain.

Weird year and I am so fed up with these hopelessly hot and humid days. OK, I stop whining - at least I have AC.

I also have had only a few days of good rain since early May. It has rained a lot more at the weather station 25 miles away. From June 15 through July I had almost daily spatters in the evening which didn't get through the mulch but created heavier blackspot pressure than my primitive spraying can handle. F. Mistral and a few others are half defoliated. No rain at all for three weeks.

However, F. Mistral starts sprawling every August.

Black Magic. Popular Florist Rose in Europe.
Used here some also. Grows to seven ft. I shouldn't
have this rose. HMF says it is a zone seven and
higher. But it keeps making it through the winter.
