Roses for the Caribbean: sand, salt, & sun

Having spent the last 20 years growing roses in zones 4 - 6, I now find myself with the opportunity to expand my rose horizons dramatically. My wife and I have found a winter retreat on a sandy beach in Central America. We are talking almost pure sand and only 100 feet from the sea. The most predominant ornamentals are hibiscus and oleander, both of which do well under the conditions. Naturally, we are looking for roses proven to handle this environment.

The best reference I have found is the paper ÂOld Roses for South Florida by John McLaughlin & Joe Garofalo (see the attached link).

Has anyone experience with these conditions or the roses mentioned in the article under these conditions?

Here is a link that might be useful: Old Roses for South Florida
