weigela [wine and roses] - deer resistant??????
Comments (11)The deer have never shown interest in the variegated weigela and I have had lovely blooms every year, however, that is not the case for wine and roses. Wouldn't say its their favorite but they definitely eat it. I know my garden center said they were off the deer eating list as well. Guess it depends on what else is on the menu. Comments (4)I have read that not only lavendar, but also scented geraniums, chives, and rosemary work well to keep the deer away. I recently planted a Valentine Rose near my front door - so far so good! I will keep my fingers crossed. All the roses in my backyard are good - we have a Lab that keeps them safe so far. Comments (18)Eglantine has leaves that smell like green apples, especially when there's been a rain or a morning dew and the sun is evaporating those water droplets off the leaves, but it also is a rose bush that very much looks like "a briar". The bush's appearance is "rustic", and it also is a big rose. If it's happy the shrub will be at least 7' X 7', with canes and branches awkwardly growing this way & that. I think it's a wonderful rose for a hedgerow or the right landscape, if you have the room for it, but it's not at all "svelte". (Please also understand that I personally wish that I owned a plot of land where it made aesthetic sense to grow this rose! I LOVE THE IDEA OF LEAVES THAT SMELL LIKE GREEN APPLES!! Unfortunately, I don't live on or own such a piece of land. :( )...See MoreDeer Resistant evergreens
Comments (16)These emeralds were not pruned by us, but by the deer. After some hard winters, it is obvious that they will eat almost anything. However, during the worst times, they did not eat the Dragon Lady holly. It is the only holly they did not eat. They have also not eaten our weeping pine, weeping spruce, mahonia, Alaska cedar, cryptomeria, leather leaf viburnum, or prague viburnum. They do not seem to ever touch any of the viburnums we have, but only prague is truly evergreen and not much of a bloomer, at least in my zone. When the deer are this bad, it makes gardening a creative challenge. Good luck!...See Morephil_schorr
