Who do you order from?

Hi! I'm new to ordering roses online or from a catalog, so I thought I'd ask for some recommendations of who to order from. Who are the good companies to purchase from, and who are the ones to stay away from?

I don't know if it matters, but I'm looking for bi-color, climbing roses.

I don't know if it makes a difference, but I try to order from nurseries who would be alert to heat tolerance. However, you would be more interested in cold hardy, I think.

I live in Oklahoma, about 4 hours north of Dallas. I order from Chamblees and Antique Rose Emporium because I think that they may avoid selling roses that cannot take the summer temps of over 100 for extended periods of time.

You would have a far different expectation than I.
Your rose growing goals would be different than mine. If I put down too much mulch, the critters will make their home in it. If you put down the same amount of mulch, you may protect your roses from winter kill.

Many posters can give you better recommendations for northern rose growing.

Ashdown Nursery is one that is quite involved with the rose growing on this forum.

It depends on what kinds of roses you want to grow. Vintage Gardens is the biggest for OldGardenRoses. Hortico is in Canada. As Sammy says, get feedback from others upyour way. And maybe say a bit about the kinds of roses you want to grow.

Carmela's is by far the best outfit I've ordered plants from. The plants come well-packed, of good size, and have done the best long-term in my collection. Eoom is next--wish their selection was bigger--followed by v.coerulea on ebay, then Carter and Holmes, whose stuff is small and young for the pot size. Alia

Is it too late to order some Knockouts? Who do you recommend?

Maybe everyone's Home Depots are different, unfortunately, but I was just at Home Depot and they had pots and pots of potted double red Knockouts, as well as single Knockouts. Lowe's had a bunch of them as well - even our most expensive garden center has them. I could swear I even saw body bag KOs. Maybe you want to mail order - but from what I saw in Maryland, it's the most stocked rose out there. Sadly for me, as I was looking for HTs and floribundas.

Eloise and you thought we only enable brugs roflmao Good luck with your seeds! Theresa 2 of the Oochroma's came with blossoms. Oh my gosh they are so cute and tiny. Why did I think they were bigger? One is purple..blue? The order says Royal blue. One is Wine Red and then F. Red. Got to go to e bay and check for color. It was a rush rush kind of buying thing ahahahaha Like Kristy when she had a drink or is in pain and finds out later she was on e bay roflmao. But I do have to leave a wonderful comment for her. She was so nice until I had figured out how to pay since I had never verified my paypal account and the amount was to much to go through. Caren you are real funny. Hold off on buying EE's If you just want the normal kind I am offering. Wynnes AA & A dahlias don't flop- they breed them with broomstick strong stems! They also have about 20 BB & B sized dahlias. I ordered from Swan Island once- 10 tubers-- 6 of them didn't eye up & 2 weren't what I ordered- the remaining 2 the blooms were of poor quality & bad form so....never again! Ferncliff is Ok but they're in Canada so there's the extra expense of the phyto certificate. Dan's is OK & Connell's is Ok... sometimes.

Palatine and Pickering, both in Canada,(but ship to the U.S.) send nice, big bareroots, grafted on multiflora. I believe they will start taking orders on September 1st for the 2009/2010 season.

Hi Dan, now that Great Lakes Roses has closed, I've been doing my ordering from Palatine and David Austin. Both have arrived in great shape with good canes and long roots (especially Palatine) and both have really thrived in my garden.

I order from Roses Unlimited, Chamblees and High Country Roses. Also have ordered from Ashdown. All these sources have been very helpful in selecting what is best for my zone. Call them to talk over what you want and what will do best in your zone. Good luck.

My favorite rose vendors are High Country Roses, Hartwood Roses, Vintage, Chamblees, and ARE. I especially recommend High Country Roses (in Utah) for your zone. Bonus: They are having a great sale right now.
