I wonder if there is anything that would fit the bill. Zone 4 is pretty low. Something in the Canadian Explorer series?

The Canadian Explorers would be hardy for you but they have very little or no fragrance. I have Ramblin' Red & it is hardy with a slight fragrance. One rose that I've thought about because it is supposed to be hardy in my area & fragrant is Rosarium Uetersen but have no personal experience to share. There are some very fragrant OGR climbers but most of the ones that are hardy in Z4 do not repeat (such as the Albas).

I don't know if you'll find all three of your requirements.
Especially for zone 4. Cane hardiness would be the most important for you in your zone in my opinion. I googled ''winter hardy (cane hardy) climbing roses'' a thread from the northern gardening forum popped up, perhaps you should check that out it might be of some help to you. I grow John Cabot very hardy for me in Zone 5. Helpmefind.com says it is hardy to Zone 2b. It does repeat for me now that its well established,(10yrs.) but no fragrance......mark

There is no such plant.

Fragrance, repeat-bloom and hardiness. Pick two; you have your choice of only two for climbers in zone 4.

I'm glad you don't care about color, because it will be either white or pink.

But here's something you can try. 'Applejack' has a long bloom period over most of the summer. It has fragrant flowers and it's hardy. But it is a big shrub rose. Long canes. You could tame it into a climber if you really work at that.

For a split rail fence, a long caned shrub would work perfectly fine. Climbers are actually a bit awkward, since the only place to attach them is somewhere along the rails. Applejack is a more manageable size.

I am in z/5 and plan on trying Darlow's Enigma next spring. It is a zone 5 rose, but may do ok if in the right enviroment.

DE isn't a climber in zone four. It often dies to the ground. When this happens, it rebuilds into a five foot, dense thorny shrub.

I think you'll have to forgo fragrance if you want a hardy climber for Zone 4. I also recommend the Explorer series. I'd start with 'William Baffin' if I were you.

cupshaped roses, the rose on the right is (alba) Konigin von Danemark. Its probibly my favorite rose i grow. I posted the pictures so waterlily girl could get a sense of how large the explorers actually get in time, probibly not the best choice for a split-rail fence. But definetly hardy enough......mark

Ilse Krohn Superior has long thin cnes that should be great for twining on a fence. It has medium fragrance. It is tip hardy in my zone 5a. Another that is also tip hardy and a fabulous rose is Rosarium Ueterson. More shrubby with stiff canes.

Supposedly zones are warming so maybe you can stretch hardiness.
