Large cane growing from small cane

I have a Black Bacarra rose that is producing strange growth. It seems that large 'basal break' like canes are growing from smaller canes. The difference is not extreme, but I notice it, and I also had to remove a huge branch from the bush b/c it was laid over from the weight of the larger growth. Does this sound familiar to anyone?

Esther said that the canes were put in only 2 inches apart, which makes leaving them to mature impossible. Esther, it's so great that they have roots! I like your idea about transplanting them into pots. Then you will have the fun of letting them bloom and seeing who they are! I might put a polite note somewhere near where they were "planted", explaining about the hostas, and how you have transplanted them to pots. A fractional inch broke off of how long of a shoot? The white portion is normally under the ground, you must have gone probing for it. If the entire shoot was very small, it will not regrow. A second shoot is reasonable given that a small shoot was recently forming.

In my experience, cane borers will kill the ends of the canes as far as they go but not get pervasive into the rest of the cane for the most part. I just trim off any dead ends of the canes that have that black hole until I get beyond the hold part, and squish any visible bugs/worms. In my zone, they're a nuisance kind of like sawfly larvae but nothing that will seriously damage the roses. In other zones, people have to get more aggressive at sealing off the end of canes after pruning with things like clear nail polish or their varieties of borers will make a much greater inroads into the canes. It seems like that's the case in much warmer zones than ours. I don't think the nail polish would hurt anything in our zones if you wanted more insurance after you prune, it's just that I haven't found it necessary. As always, avoiding any sprays for these bugs will mean that the good bugs/birds will help you manage these pests for the future. I used to see more cane borers a few years ago but can't say I noticed any of these types of holes in the hundreds of rose prunings I had this spring. Edie, There are a lot of hybrids with maculata in their genes. My own hybrid I feel is easier care than maculata but is still prone to mildew. One that is a beauty but still a hard one to grow indoors is Flamingo Queen (it has maculata in it).. Sophie, Irene, Lana, Silver Mist are a lot less fussy than maculata. Comte de Lesseps is an easy grower with red flowers. If you lived in a tropical zone you could probably grow maculata without much ado but when the weather starts to cool, you better start prepping for mildew attacks. I don't recall the name of this one (a cutting from FWBG) but so easy to grow. It is growing in a pan with other begonias for years now. The white bloomer is my own seed grown begonias from maculata. a variety of canes makes a nice contrast in size, shape, patterns, and color Don't get hung up on one begonia as there are many to choose from that may fit your personality a lot better than maculata.

I'm not sure, but a large cane growing from a smaller cane can be an indication of RRD.

I can tell you that in this area, some rose gardeners have found larger canes growing from smaller ones often. It happens mostly on shrubs and climbers, but has also happened on hybrid tea and floribunda roses as well. I have never quite understood when I have read in books that this does not happen because I've seen it with my own eyes and not just in my own garden. I might also add, that it is not to the detriment of the rose.

I think for RRD, it would have to be a really weird-looking large cane--like a nightmare cane.

I occasionally get big and rather soft canes growing after I use alfalfa pellets. I take it as a good sign and an indication of how large my shrub will get when it fully matures. If it is not too much out of proportion, I just put a stick with a notched "V" at one end under the cane to help support it. If it's really badly disproportionate, I trim off about a third of it--but that delays it from blooming.

Unless it is really weirdo-looking, I'd take it as a good sign of your rose's future.

What Buford said was my experience. It happened at about shoulder height, and the strange growth appeared also. But it was unusual to find this cane about twice the size of the cane it came from. This was my first sign of RRD.

The strange growth is not always a good early sign since some roses do that anyway - like for me Dublin.

I guess this is not the same thing, but on my Tess of D'. there is a huge sport coming from the base of about 7' right now, it has branches off it and no flower buds, I have seen this before and cut it back because of the rediculous height, but in this case I am letting it grow because I am curious to see if it will bloom. Could not one of these strange canes come from another smaller cane as well as from the crown???? STRANGE BUSINESS, THIS ROSE BUSINESS!

People giving pruning and deadheading advice often say it can't happen, but it happens a lot. Also, the older cane section will grow thicker and stronger with time.

Is the Tess own root? If not it could be a sucker from the root stock. They usually grow very tall and straight and don't bloom.
