Riku, anyone, a thick layer of leaves for winter protection?

Every fall I have this huge mound of leaves from a lot of big, old trees. Raked and tossed in the under brush.

How would a couple of feet on my roses be for protection? Would they cause canker? Then do I rake them in the Spring or let them be?

If a bad idea what do you do for protection? Most of my roses are supposedly z5 which I'm in, a few z6. Past winters I've done nothing or lately mounded the more tender with a bit of soil. In the Spring I've had a lot of cane loss. The mounding didn't seem to do anything.

I'm sure the health of the roses going into winter has a lot to do with how they fare. Mine good be a lot better!
