How does Digitalis do in Southern California?

I have planted some foxgloves in the garden this year, because they're beautiful and I doubt the rabbits will eat them. I also plan on planting some white foxglove seeds too. Question is: Will I have to treat them as annuals here? I have planted delphiniums (Pacific Giants strain) in 2005 and 2006, and they just up and die after they've bloomed every time - yes, I water. They were great while they lasted, but are definitely an annual for me. Will foxgloves be any better? Thanks for any help.
