one of the best tools for your garden ... and now i find out i dont have a picture of mine.. lol ...

here is a pic of a garbage can lid ... that fits the bill .. a lot of the tops have formed handles which are problematic .... the sled.. or my lid.. is smooth ...

i can carry [plants ... move refuse.... hold tools..

whatever my little heart desires ...

obviously.. now is the time of year to find these sleds locally.. in the great white north ...

3 of them.. and i can carry over a plant.. dig a hole while putting soil in the other two... move the plant in.. and move the soil back in.. all while not ruining the lawn .. mulch.. or disturbing the rest of the bed ...

It is great advice. I have the perfect sled (or snow disc or whatever); smooth, tough plastic, about the size of a garbage can lid, but with a sturdy rope handle on each side on the inside (which makes it much easier to pull or lift than an upside-down garbage can lid).

I use it all the time, especially for moving plants but as for holding dirt when I am digging a hole, or weeds when I am weeding, and it is also handy for tossing your pruners, weeders, etc. so you don't lose them.

I have been using a sled for YEARS in the garden. Need to be getting another one since mine has holes in the bottom from constant use! Mine is very long and has high sides- perfect for hauling compost and such. I've attached rope to mine for easy pulling.

While I do use a wheel barrow for certain projects, I prefer the sled most of the time. What I like about the sled is that you can haul very weighty and cumbersome loads. This spring I was making a raised veggie bed out back and was hauling the big blocks in the wb. Unless you balanced those things right the whole thing will tip over!!

Keepitlow: I have a Reliance that is now about 12 years old, and I think it is a fine peach. It's a little hard for me to get around the fine points of peach flavor; I think nearly all home-grown peaches that are ripened on the tree are good. I don't have Elberta, but I understand there are early and late versions of this peach. Redhaven has been a standard commercial peach for many years, and I wouldn't disagree with Ace that it would also be a good choice. When you limit yourself to locally available choices you are, well, limiting yourself. Any particular reason for that? With all the internet nursery resources available today, you could study the descriptions and choose from dozens of peach varieties. All of the trees in my fairly large orchard have been ordered in by mailorder or internet, all of them bareroot. I have had very few failures or bad experiences. Have a look around the internet and expand your knowledge of peach varieties, then make an informed choice yourself. Bear in mind that when you plant a peach you are taking on potential insect and disease problems that you may have to learn to deal with in some way. You may have mentioned your location at some time in the past, but if so I have forgotten it. In most zone 7 locations, particularly in the east, you will have to deal with plum curculio and the oriental fruit moth in the insect department, and disease problems like bacterial canker and fruit brown rot. This is true for all peach varieties, but, as Ace has observed, the later peaches are more subject to problems simply because they hang on the trees longer. Unfortunately, later peaches are usually sweeter, more dense, and generally higher quality, so it's a tradeoff. If you don't feel you want to look around any more, I would just go with the Reliance, which is early-midseason, a good peach, and no worse in the insect and disease departments than anything else. Eeek, I posted to this last night and it is not showing up! It was a confession that CHAD made me do it...I ordered one of the Evergreen (Lust, lust!), and the "twofers" of Promise and the white one. I would not have done that but then realized that my whites from last year are taking time off, and I will need those for post Christmas bouquets. IT is raining cats and dogs and little fishes here this morning, with 4 different weather warnings on "weatherbug". Sure hope the power does not go out in my greenhouse or everyone will catch cold out there! Our gas fireplace is down for "maintainance" (backordered parts) so can not bring them into the house to warm up either. IN this weather we get slides on the edge of of the island that take power poles down with them. We are high (But not dry) on top of the island so we only have a problem if the wind blows trees down, but being without power on this end of the island is a misery.

I have spent so much time on GW asking for advice and after much research AND because I spent so much time asking for help here and it took me so long to decide AND my DH would go crazy if I changed my mind, I am still going to go with the GE Monogram DBL ovens. I love the glide racks and knobs and it just seems to have everything I want, except convection conversion. Also, my DH says not to worry about the GE auction, buy-out, merger, whatever it ends up to be and I trust him...hope he's right! Good luck.

Even better, he convinced several of his clients to do the same thing, so they think he's a genius too!

Come on folks! If we all did sensible things like this in everyday life, the economy would tank completely. We're suppose to go out there, buy useless crap we don't need and make some dude way up on a hill rich. That's the American way! Aren't you Americans??

(I like using these lids inside when I'm repotting something. Most of the mess stays inside the lid. I guess I'm unAmerican.)

This is great!! What a fabulous idea--and at a time of year when you can actually find the darn things.

I have been gardening for more years than I'll admit to but I have never heard of this before. Ken, thanks for the early Christmas present. Wicked cool, as we say here in Boston.

Those plastic sleds are great. My wife uses one to bring groceries from the garage - grass path about 75' from the house.

the big boxy sled ... i usually fill it up too much ... so i dont use it anymore ...

the most amazing thing is how easily it pulls across grass ... in summer

And for those of us who live in the part of the country where you will NEVER find sleds of any kind, I highly recommend a nice,heavy duty painter's canvas. I use them almost daily for holding dead-heads, weeds, leaves, trimmings of all sorts, mulch and more.

oh come on donna.. i gave you a link to the interweb .... every hear of ordering on line ...

what would be precious.. is the look on your neighbors face.. when you start pulling a sled around z8 ... i wonder how many of the natives would wander up.. and ask what the heck it is .... or the transplants who stop in to recall childhood memories in the great white north ...

besides.. you dont have to launder a plastic sled ..

you guys are great!i cherish laughter above all so this has been a hoot.
for serious, we find trash can lids too flimsy for big digging projects/holding dirt(like bulb trench planting; for that, we use large thick mil heavy plant pots), but great for small amounts of dirt.but they are way too flexible to carry an armload of plants; for that, i use my ubiquitously useful rectangular bins (Rubbermaid, box stores; about 28"L x 20" w x 12" H).

My kids gave me an old Red Flyer wagon that I use to haul things. Last year I waited for a sale on sleds but they were all gone. Thought I might find one on the street on recycling/garbage day but no luck. Guess I will have to go out and spend the Big Bucks, LOL.
