Vernonia warning - one tough divide!

I tackled something new today that was quite an experience! I have two vernonias that are a several years old side by side. I've always wanted to divide them to make a larger grouping, but never got around to it until today. OMG!

First, digging out the clump was incredibly challenging. It was about 12-15" wide and deep. Then to divide it was a joke. Often just a pull or sticking with shovel will do it. not a chance! I tried my trusty Felco pruning saw to no avail. I actually had to go get an ax and whack it apart. The root ball was quite woody.

Anyhow, I got about nine small divisions and spread them around. Can't wait til the spring to see if they made it!

I intentionally left the 2nd original clump alone, in case I blew the divisions for some reason. I usually will research such a move first to see if anything special to be aware of or best time of year. But today I was impulsive and just did it while the mood struck. Hopefully, it will be fine.
