Dividing a Broughtonia

Last summer when my Broughtonia sanguinea bloomed there was one spike with white flowers and one with pink flowers. In other words, I have two plants in the same pot and didn't realize it until then. I'd like to separate the two plants if possible and was waiting for new root growth before I attempted the deed. Well, today I noticed new roots about 1/2 inch long, so I'm assuming now's the time.

Since this plant is really a tangled mess of roots I'm sure it's not going to be easy. How sensitive are these to root disturbance if not outright root breakage? I guess I'm not concerned about skipping a season of blooms, but I really don't want to kill it.
