need help filling in the gaps

This past summer I ripped out all of the junipers that were growing on the mulch on my backyard. I just hate low-growing junipers, what more can I say.

If its not too late to find some perennials at the clearance sales at my local nurseries, I could use some suggestions on filling in these spaces. I like things that grow low to the ground (except prickly junipers).

Or should I just plant annuals next spring like tons of Angelonia. It worked really nice next to my garage (see last two pics below which were taken today).

That's such a great, large area that it could really become a high light of the yard. Okay, that's an ugly fence but the rest is great.

Agreed on junipers with grass growing through them.

At the fall prices, getting some plants such as Lamium - 'Pink Pewter', 'Orchid Frost', heucheras or tiarellas - 'Sugar and Spice', maybe some Hakone grasses, won't really hurt and you can spend all winter drawing up a master plan.

You'll have the fun of planning and then revising, as it clashes with reality.

First things first, I would check the soil and amend if necessary.

Some smaller hostas would be beautiful in your beds. Also ferns and annual coleus. I started coleus from seed under lights inside this year and had beautiful plants in pots as well as in the ground. It's also easy to take cuttings and keep them just in water all winter in a bright window. I have to agree with you about the prickly Junipers. The open spaces look wonderful and will be fun to fill in.

red eared-You did the right thing w/the turtle! That blind turtle of my mom's is going to outlive her, that is too much of a commitment for me, without any payoff, as far as I am concerned! I would love to see pics of your house. Post them here if you want! hoosier-Thanks! I guess since this is going to be our home for a loooong time, I feel I want everything perfect. Also, this is the first(and maybe the last) house that is not only a home, but a way of expressing ourselves. I never used to be "into" interior decorating, landscaping, etc. I mean, I could appreciate a beautifully appointed room or a pretty plant, but now I am actually interested in learning more about them both. While I just said I feel more comfortable in a slighly messy (lived in) house, I also appreciate going to someone's house and seeing that a "mood" has been created and effort has been put into bringing it all together. I am worried about having my beautiful spanish dining set handed down from my parents, gorgeous art on the walls, well thought out window treatments and then have something simple and basic as baseboards detract. But yes, yes, I know...no one is noticing! Except maybe a Gardenwebber. Not sure I would let any of you in my home! Haha, I kid, I kid!

Those are not pines, they are spruces. Do you see that biggest one to the right of the other two small ones (my right as I look at the photo). That's how big the other two are going to get, and bigger, and bigger as time goes by. That looks like a drainage ditch between those trees and the wall. Is it? Plants block the view, but not the noise. The only thing that might block the noise is a poplar or cottonwood, which will lose it's leaves in the winter so not block the view. But their leaves rustle loudly in the wind. Or just get a wind chime for the noise! I'd call it a day for blocking the view with the trees you already have, and I'd plant a white birch and red maple to give me something pretty to look at contrasting against those spruces. But if that raised bed thing in front of the spruce trees is going to be a flower or vegetable garden, then just call it a day period, because you'll want sun, not shade. Or plant two more trees in front of those two spruces, along the street. In that case, I'd look for two white pines. They are easy peasy to grow but for some reason uncommon at the plant nurseries.

I have a similar gap in my kitchen that I built purposefully. I had simple wooden rails built and the space was designed to be exactly the correct width for a standard sheet pan. Now I have all my sheet pans easily accessible, as well as cooling racks and cutting boards and a roasting pan. The space is infinitely flexible.

Lilianne, Yes, SS refers to Stainless Steel :) While it doesn't match the countertops, it would be a nice continuation to the stovetop. Of course if you had "leftovers" from the countertop installation, it might also be possible to cut a strip and secure it in that gap. Our ranges are designed and approved to be installed with zero side-clearance (only a couple mm to allow the stove to slide in and out of its spot). Most of our clients have wood cabinets on either side of their range, with no issues as long as the other requirements are adhered to, like using the mandatory backspacer and ensuring that the oven doors are "proud" of the cabinets. i that one tree a maple???

if so... hosta will be a challenge.. but do visit that forum.. should you wish to be enabled ...

old juniper could compete with the trees... and new young plants will be tricky.. as a grower of hosta... under trees.. i suggest that you do not amend the soil.. nor ever fert only a plant... when you dig a hole.. you will sever tree roots.. and they will be very aggressive in growing new feeder roots into amended, fertilized holes... so we try to fool them into not getting all excited about the new hole ....

as to fall sales... i dont really think you usually get to shop names ... just buy whatever strikes you ... go by size..... you can rearrange next fall .... if you dont like how it works out ....

Excellent point about the tree roots, can't top experience.

As to fall sales, there's always some scruffy gems that are overlooked and often a large number of them in one flat. It's like panning for gold.

How about cotoneaster? Many of them grow close to the ground. Scarlet leader is good, but can spread as a ground cover. Cranberry cotoneaster is also nice. What do you others think?
