Help! 27 9/16" Lacanche Range in 30" Gap? How to Fill?

Hello! We currently have a 30" range that has stopped working after many years. We would like to replace with a Lacanche Rully range. However, this is a French company and therefore the sizing is non-standard: it is only 27 9/16" wide. This leaves approximately 1.25" on both sides of the range, which is both impractical and unattractive. The countertops are black soapstone. I was thinking of filling the gap with some sort of fireproof material (fireplace ceramic fiberboard?) and then trying to cover the edges (front and top) with soapstone molding somehow. Is this a crazy idea? Any other suggestions? Thanks in advance!

Lilianne,

Yes, SS refers to Stainless Steel :) While it doesn't match the countertops, it would be a nice continuation to the stovetop. Of course if you had "leftovers" from the countertop installation, it might also be possible to cut a strip and secure it in that gap.

Our ranges are designed and approved to be installed with zero side-clearance (only a couple mm to allow the stove to slide in and out of its spot). Most of our clients have wood cabinets on either side of their range, with no issues as long as the other requirements are adhered to, like using the mandatory backspacer and ensuring that the oven doors are "proud" of the cabinets. We (or Art Culinaire in the US) can provide you with the installation requirements ahead of time to make sure that all is in order.

You could add a piece of differently-colored soap stone and pretend that this was an intentional design choice. I don't think you need a complicated fireproof substructure though. Wood should be sufficient. After all, wooden kitchen cabinets regularly abut kitchen stoves.

Or you could have a local metal fabricator make a stainless steel frame that matches the stainless steel on the stove. Again, you'd probably need to have some wooden support pieces.

Hello Lilianne,

Several of our Canadian clients have run into the same situation when replacing their range with a Lacanche. As "M" suggested, the easiest and most attractive solution could be to have a vertical filler piece to match (or contrast) with the cabinets, and cap it with a SS filler between the countertop and the range. The SS would be a nice visual continuation of the top of the range.

A local metal fabricator should be able to do this quite easily for you with the proper dimensions. Please remember to allow for a bit of space on either side of the range to facilitate installation and pulling it out when needed. The opening width for Rully should be 705mm / 27-3/4" .

Update....the engine is running!!! My son and I had faced a setback earlier in the week when one of the head bolts sheared after the second round of torquing to 36 ft-lbs. That was a bummer, but a couple days later we got the bolt out with an easyout. We put all the parts of the rider back together (with a new needle/beam torque wrench) and fired it up with some carb cleaner, and it started up fairly quickly!!! As expected, we did have the smoking of burning off of oil, but after 20 minutes or so, that seem to diminish to nothing. Seem to have a little bit of burning oil smell still, but I am hoping that is just some residual oil burning off the frame or muffler shields - those parts around the muffler seem to get very hot. Only remaining issue was a backfire after turning it off. It happened half the time after shutting it down, even when I would let it idle for 15 seconds before turning it off. But I can probably live with the backfiring. I would welcome any input on this problem, but I can do some research on the internet about this seemingly separate issue. Thanks so much for walking my son and I through our first fix of this magnitude....usually we only fix fuel problems. It was a really satisfying experience, and I am really grateful for your advice along the way....I was truly amazed. Again, thanks so much.

When I had to fill four cinderblock raised beds, approx. 20 feet by 4 feet by 18inches high, I took the plunge and got a delivery from a local farm. It was rather expensive for my taste, but for me was easier than making 100 trips for bagged stuff, and in the long run probably wasn't that much more expensive after all, when you consider time and gas, etc. Of course, your bed is smaller, so doable with bags. If you really want to finish this today, I would think you'd have to go with bagged stuff, unless you can get a delivery today. I can't help you with the clay soil question, but I put a link below that might help with calculating what you need. Well, regarding the installer, they put in 700 sq ft of hw flooring for us 14 years ago-- no problems. They also put in another 300 or so using materials they supplied--no problems. I supplied the (faulty) material that they installed--problems. Yes they **should** have checked the moisture content, but I guess the reality is that here n southern california and with suppliers they have used for the last 20 years this is not an issue. Reclaimed wood flooring, freshly-milled by boutique shops is perhaps something of a brave new world. I will of course check the new lot of wood's MC as well as that of the sub-floor before this next install, but I would rather stick with our GC's installer and give him a second chance with this material.

Thanks for the headsup, angela12345. I measured the GD and went to HD to measure the interior dimension of a 30" sink base cabinet. My oh my, a 30" sink base is TINY! But, it will have to do for now. The 33" sink base has more space inside and I wish we could put it in our layout without my being so bothered. Sigh. Alas, I really can't stand how the spacing of the sink base is uneven in relation to the already lopsided window on the wall. It makes me feel I am living in the winchester mystery house! So far, I have ascertained that it can hold our trash, recycle bin and compost pail, with a smidge of room left for fire extinguisher. Definitely no room for insta-hot water heater and filter. So, we nix that from our wish list. I am looking for a single bowl undermount. After some online research, I found a kindred sink KCUS30A-10/10BG that I like but I don't know if it's available online or not. I wish I could use the ticor sink but the one I like needs a 33" sink base. Bummer. The kindred sink I am interested in will have interior dimension of 27"W x 16"L x 10"H. Thank you, both! I assume by SS you mean stainless steel and not soapstone? That's funny because I assumed that I would try to match the countertop with a soapstone molding. But obviously stainless steel would be an easier choice. Not yet having see the stove in person, I wasn't quite sure what the top of the stove looked like. I'd never heard of a metal fabricator...will go check! Patrick: could you please comment on the safety of having wood adjacent to the Lacanche stove (either a wood spacer or cabinets)?

For any of the Lacanche representatives, I would be grateful if you could please post a photo of how these solutions look. I'm sure it is a common problem, since the Rully is a nonstandard size in the US. Thank you!

Bonjour Lilianne,

I knew we helped one of our clients get this exact set-up before, and I found a picture again. As you can see, the stainless steel pieces nicely fill the gap between the range, the countertops and the cabinets.

Our metal fabricator is of course in Canada, however this should help illustrate what you need when you find someone locally. If you don't, please let me know and we can coordinate with him and arrange for shipping.
