Can you identify mystery flower for me?

I see this plant flower up here in the Appalachian Mts. every Fall in people's yards and have no idea what it is. Would love to have it for my own yard since it blooms when just about everything else is gone.

Can someone help?

Sigh. Looks like phlox subulata to me. I'm sighing because I can't get this sucker to last and thrive more than one season in my garden. It's gorgeous when there's a big swath of it like that! I'm not sure about growing from seed, but these are easily found at nurseries or on-line. Do you have anything else in that bed? You might want to consider interplanting something else, as in a week or so (as you know from last two years) your phlox will stop blooming and then be a bit boring. Dee

Sounds like garden phlox or even dames rocket but without a picture it would be hard to guess. So many flowers that the discription may sound the same. If you end up getting a picture maybe post it on the name that plant forum I am sure you would get very fast results.

I'd like to tag on a question, if you don't mind.

Larkspur has been sown for next year. Once it finishes, I'd like to have another annual coming up to replace the color. Can I sow the cleome in with the larkspur next spring in zone 7?

Larkspur is frost-tolerant while Cleome is not, so I'd sow the Cleome after the last expected frost date. Seed from Cleome that was dropped by the plant in the fall typically won't germinate until the ground is fairly warm in spring, but seedlings can occasionally get nipped by a late frost anyway (not a problem because germination from self-sown seed is staggered over time). If you plant all your seed at once in spring and do it too early, you might lose most or all of the crop to a cold snap.
