Trying any new annuals this year?
Comments (15)Monarda Bergamo. Love the color and different bloom pattern. They've got they're first set of true leaves and hoping they survive to adulthood...LOL. I've also got seed for Cyress Vine and Scarlet Runner Bean for Hummingbirds. It's going to be a mega challenge to keep the deer and groundhogs from eating them. Trying colored Sweet Alyssum in the pink-purple ranges. Also trying white varieties other than Carpet of Snow... Avalanche, Snow Crystals and one other I can't remember. Critters ate all the Cosmos last year so I'm trying the Versailles behind Limelight Four O'Clocks (new to me and supposedly poisonous) in containers on porch steps. Trying the dwarf version in containers with other Butterfly/Hummingbird nectar plants I can somewhat protect from critters. Datura m. Belle Blance strictly because it's supposedly poisonous and hope critters will leave it alone. I know just about everyone but me has had them before but I direct seeded poppies in various places. I just want to see those swaying, delicate blooms once. If they get icky from the first rain it could be the first and last time I plant them...LOL. Sowed California Mission Bells, Shirley Singles & Doubles and Lauren's Grape. Here is a link that might be useful: Monarda Bergamo...See MoreBeets in the tropics? Comments (8)Yes theoretically they could be importing their seeds - but this is a traditional dish, which means it's probably really old, and back then, farmers didn't buy seeds, especially not across oceans, and especially not poor countries (remember, Haiti started off as a bunch of slaves who just finally managed to free themselves). Even nowadays I'm pretty sure subsistence farmers in poor countries propagate their own vegetables in their vegetable gardens the old fashioned way - they don't HAVE any money to buy seeds. For example, you don't see any traditional American or European dishes that involve cassava or winged beans or papaya or breadfruit or durian or passionfruit. I mean sure, there's pineapple upside-down cake, but that only came after canned goods and trains for shipping items became widely available, and back in the early 20th century America was one of the few countries that had these economic/technological resources. Oh and you're right that daylength changes are important, but just plain old weather gradually getting colder until there are frosts will induce dormancy followed by flowering in temperate plants. Remember, even in tropical countries it can get cold up in the mountains (like the Andes - where the potato comes from originally) I'm guessing that maybe if you just leave the beets in the ground long enough they'll flower. They may not have that winter to induce them, but nature isn't stupid - EVENTUALLY you've GOT to reproduce. Maybe in like 10 months to a year or more they'll just eventually finally flower, winter or no winter....See Morecool night tonight and tropical lilies
Comments (11)catherinet i have about 65 varieties of waterlilies. i started collecting them last year after growing 3 varieties for many years. all are in large containers or above ground ponds. i also am working with a local youth home and growing them to raise money for the program there. the students are fascinated with them. most containers are 25 gallon pots. i have ordered from texas waterlilies and maryland aquatics with great satisfaction. i just got 2 from pondmegastore that were pathetic looking. the hardy lilies are no problem in the winter. i plan to leave the tropicals out as well, but keep one plant in the greenhouse for insurance. most tropicals i have are rumored to be more tolerant of cold....See MoreWhat big paper project will you try this year?
Comments (5)You mean you aren't starting on next year's gifts & cards ;-)?! I still am in holiday crafting mode with a party tonite & an exchange with a friend & her family. I did sit down with the latest Somerest Studio on New Year's day and finally take the plastic wrap off. That is unheard of for me to wait so long to look at my beloved magazines, lol! It sure did fire up the create juices, though! So as far as specific project plans, all I have is a round robin, a submission project, and my "roundtuit" project notebooks. Did you look at the link to the Cyberstampers/Just Jhone samples under the class transcripts section? The triangular scroll box is way cool! I'd definitely do one for a swap!...See Moreaachenelf z5 Mpls
