Am I too late?

This is my 2nd year WSing. My first was three years ago and it was very successful. I haven't WS again until this year because we moved twice. Now I am more settled. I got a some things WS but then life got busy and I have so many more seeds I want to sow. Am I too late?

NOPE! Lots of us Zone 5ers are just getting a ton of annuals started (most of mine are annuals this year, and I'm still gonna put in some perennials, too)

We just started ours last night and are also in 5b! (Illinois). We are a tad late, but I think it's alright. Hopefully we can plant them the weekend of May 15th.

I hate to be discouraging but I still think that any temperature below freezing will kill newly stuck cuttings. They're not going to have time to produce much of a root ball and protecting and insulating that tiny root ball from freezing will be nearly impossible. You can give it a try but don't be surprised if they don't live to spring. I have one of those small greenhouses and have had cuttings that were rooted from June freeze and die on me inside there over my winters. It depends on the rose and how hardy and vigorous it is to begin with and how big and healthy the plant is going into winter. I do have one other suggestion if you feel you have to do these this fall. Stick the cuttings now and give them as much time as you can to root before winter sets in. Once you get your first frost try digging holes and sinking the cutting pots right into the ground. Go deep and bury them completely. Be sure to put markers where you've sunk them so you can find them easily in the spring. In the spring when your roses just begin to leaf out dig them up and put them back in the sun. I have done this in the past with very small seedlings with some success. Like I said though, no guarantees, but it's an option.

No, squash and cukes love the heat, especially squash. Plant them. Better too late than too early. I'm having trouble with basil this year, too. Mine looks poor and has already tried to bolt; a sure sign of stress. I'm not sure what the issue is since the weather has mostly settled down. My peas are just about finished. I've pulled out most of the plans and the ones that are still left aren't producing anything nearly as tasty in the heat as they did in the cool season. But my peas were late getting started this year; just not enough sun when they were seedlings I guess.

Mrs Tlc, like Amber said cucumbers and zucchini grow fast, try to find varieties that take the shortest amount of time to mature. And later in the season you have to pay attention about the pickleworm and when it is coming. If you are vigilant and look for signs of pest or disease, you can be very successful with these veggies. I planted zucchini and cucumbers at the same time and zucchini are already producing a bunch while the cucumbers have fruit but are not ready yet. Silvia

Well.. I did jump in! I just took a leap of faith and got some containers ready while I was waiting to here from ya'll! I have a Dr.s appointment and then I'm coming right home to sow some seeds!! Yay!!!

I just WS'ed some asclepias tuberosa about an hour ago, and it normally requires 3 months of cold-moist stratification. We'll have another month of cold temps here if we're "lucky." We'll see how it goes!

Greetings from a neighbor to the north, Betsy!

Even though it's officially spring, I have a feeling Ma Nature isn't through with us Wisconsin folks yet. We'll most likely still have a bit of cold, and maybe (gulp) a little more snow!

I've got a whole box of seeds other posters have recommended starting in April, so it's definitely not too late. The only problem is making myself wait! I've been sowing since February and don't want to stop!

Hi Pico! Yes.. I think you are right. Old Man winter is still hanging around. My area has a winter storm watch until friday night!
But right now it is a beautiful sunny day. I will sow a few more seeds outside in my garage today.
Could you tell me what seeds you are waiting to sow?

Grr...so do we. On the one hand - moisture for containers! On the other hand, it's...more snow.

As for seeds to wait on, it's mostly annuals and other tender things that no likey the frost and cold. I'm sure other, smarter people will chime in, but here goes:

Marigolds
Sunflowers
Dahlia
Balsam
Gazania
Stevia
Impatiens
Luffa Sponge Gourds
Summer Savory
Ground Cherries

This weekend I'm doing some balloon flowers and forget-me-nots. I'm also doing some more MG & Cypress Vine. Since it's my first year, I'm experimenting with a few things to see which groups do better - early sowed or later (if there's even a difference at all).
