Oh no! First frost(s) and Mr. Rat moved into my compost bin

Two days in a row I noticed a rat had burrowed in the open front bottom part of my compost as there was a nice pile of finished compost conically shaped protruding from the bottom of the compost bin. I went stabbing a shovel in the bin pile today and out came a big, fat rat. I wondered when I let my kitties out in the back yard (indoor cats) a few days ago... why they were mighty interested in hanging around the bin.

I think since temperatures have finally dropped enough to consider the season 'fall' in my area that this rat thinks he found a warm, cozy bed and breakfast. I'm going to add larger boards to completely seal off the bottom front and bottom back of the bin to hopefully keep him out (or trap him in so he too can become compost). My cats are not mousers (no experience), so I think this is my only shot to try to let this guy know that the bin is not his home. Any other suggestions?
