Seems never ending Vera. We are getting 10 cm of snow right now, but there is a little silver lining in the forecast for the first time in a while. We are actually going to get above the freezing mark during the daytimes for the next few days. That usually happend starting the second week of March, but it hasn't this year. I do hope those little + temperatures awakens a few containers!

Well so much for the snow...it's all gone, but the crocus are all closed up under these gloomy cloudy skies :(

We got a few flakes this morning. I was actually watering the containers, as we had a couple of dry, windy days and there was no condensation in some when I noticed the snow.

Night temperatures are supposed to dip to the mid twenties by Sunday. I'm as nervous as a cat in a room full of rocking chairs! Just about everything has sprouted, and I have no garage to move the jugs to.

We haven't had too much snow in NYC this year (unless I've conveniently forgotten it already!).

But I will say that this year I cannot seem to get warm at all! Even in the dead of winter, I usually have a window cracked - hate that closed-up-winter-house-stale-air! - and walk around the house in tank tops and shorts. This year, the windows are battened down and I'm in sweats and socks, with the heat UP-UP-UP and I'm STILL cold!

I just don't get it ....

It's snowing on this side of the mountains too, right at oceans edge so you may get a little more tonight if it moves your way...

What the heck is going on? I can remember a wet sloppy snow for a few hours on March 5th one year that was unusual enough to surprise everyone, but this is getting close to April! Really weird.

Vera, OT question here. I noticed in another post you stated that a few of your Yvonne's Salvias are up. I have seeds for them, but was going to wait and sow with tender annuals in late April.

So am I wrong about them being tender annuals? Are they tougher than I think? I see you sowed them on the solstice.

I'm with you PV....I always crack a window! LOL!

Are you in the Idaho Palouse? Krem 2 news shows a heavy snow warning in effect for the the ID and WA Palouse (which I am a part of here in Rosalia) thru 7pm tomorrow night. I still don't understand how it snows when it's 40F outside! I don't think Rosalia will get much of that snow...I hope LOL! I'm not worried about my containers...the sprouted ones will be just fine, but I want a more normal March back!

you mention no being able to get warm. I'm the same way. I think in my case it has something to do with this odd weather. Yesterday I went out for a walk wearing my winter jacket, and came in and the tv was saying it was 61 degrees outside!

I was - no way. I'm usually eager to throw off the winter clothing, and get into sandals, but I feel so very easily chilled. It's unusual.

My sprouts are being very slow, compared to last year. In fact, when it went down to 20 degrees a couple of nites ago I lost some of the amaranth sprouts. :Unfortunately I didn't save any for later sowing. Well I still have a lot left.

Vera, you missed Tiffy's question for you. I am jumping in here uninvited.

Tiffy, how could you forget all of Vera's posts last year whining about her Yvonne's Salvia having frozen? Just kidding, Vera! I did my share of whining about the drought, I know I was queen of the whiners circle!

Anyway, Tiffy, Vera's Yvonne's Salvia seedlings did freeze in early spring freezing weather. I didn't sow mine until April last year, and when we had that horrid prolonged Easter freeze, I stashed the seedlings in my unheated garage.

In fall, when local weather reports said our temp was around 30 degrees, my mature salvia survived. However, the first really cold night into the 20s, it died. It was pretty dramatic, the plants looked OK at sunset and by the time the sun rose they had completely croaked.

I did sow a few Yvonne's Salvia seeds a few days ago, but because I saved my seeds I feel I have some insurance in case of a salvia disaster. Also, after they sprout, I'll probably give them some protection in case of a frost.

Anyone else had them survive frost or hard freeze?

I'm in the valley, Lewiston. We haven't got any snow yet today in spite of the storm warning. I was almost glad to see the snow storm warning last night (I'll take snow over ice any day).

It's my first year WS, and it feels like the longest winter I remember since I've been here. I am so looking forward to ten or so days of sunshine in a row!

I never got Yvonne's Salvia to germinate at all last year in 3 different Jan, April and May attempts! This is my first year for germination. So no that is hardly the case! What I got in a hurry with and sowed early April (and lost) was: Cypress Vine, Tithonia, Zinnia and Tomato...I lost only a few seedlings in most containers and one total container of Zinna were complete goners.

Besides that fact, Yvonne's Salvia are re-seeders.

Anyhoo, this is what I woke up to at 7am....it hasn't let up yet and the heavy snow warning is still in effect until 7pm this evening! Well at least the sun did decide to shine later yesterday afternoon and the crocus did have a chance to smile for a little while LOL! Now I can't see them. Maybe later today I will since the high is 40...hmmm?

Ugh! Snow! I am ready for SPRING.
I'm watching the snowfall as I type this. Thank goodness it looks like we won't be getting as much as they first forcast. I'm done! Yesterday I was outside in a longsleeve shirt and a fleece vest. Today I'm in wintercoat,hat,gloves and scarf. I did see a few Robins out and about when I drove to the post office this morning.. so I beleive Spring is just around the corner!

We had a dusting yesterday morning here and are supposed to get a little more snow tonight. This weekend is supposed to get colder, down into the 30s again, I can't stand it!

I checked my containers yesterday, it was almost 60 degrees and noticed that my poppys are starting to germinate, I know I should be happy but it's still early for my seedlings, I don't want them to freeze on me. I'm wondering if I should put them down in my basement over the weekend. The tiny stems were just popping through the seed, will they be in trouble?

I winter sowed Yvonne's Salvia a few weeks back, no germination yet. I have a lot of seeds, so I can always sow more once it warms up a little more.

Oh when will this winter be over, it can't be too much longer now.

LOL! What a crazy crazy March.

The snow has quit falling now and is already beginning to melt. My poor crocus are just now barely peeking out and I can see the tops of my chives. In a way I'm kinda glad to have the snow since the temp dipped pretty good. A little protective blanket can't hurt :D

Vera: Well now I'm really shocked. I thought your seedlings froze last year. The fact that 3 tries yielded no seedlings is a real shocker. I think of you as the magical lady with the green thumb who looks at seeds and they grow into beautiful flowers. Please do let us know how they survive today's snow and cold. Hopefully the snow will insulate them.

I checked and the few tiny seedlings are still green and perky...too small yet to get a clear pic even with the zoom on this camera phone :(
But geeeeeez the snow didn't last very long!

We're forecast to get 4-8 inches tonight...2 days after my very first seedlings emerged in their little milk jugs....chamomile plants, too boot!
