New Tea roses by Viru V.

Faith Whittlesey, Krishna's Peach, Garnet Crest-- released this decade and available from RU-- breeding includes tea-noisettes and backtracking to R. gigantea-- according to HMF, they appear to be relatively compact plants as teas go. I'm not in the market currently, but I'm curious as to what people think of these.

Michael, you're giving me ideas for my RU order. I've been wanting to get Faith Whittlesey for a long time since Whittlesey is my late mother-in-law's maiden name - and because it's a Tea. I may have to pull the trigger on this one. Thanks for posting this. You must have sensed how much I'm struggling with this list. I needed a rescue.

I've been tempted to purchase some of Viru's roses. I had the opportunity to meet Viru and his wife Girija this year. Lovely individuals and passionate about roses.
I met Faith Whittlesey in NY this year and then looked up her rose namesake on HMF. That is the one that I'd had considered since it did appear to be relatively compact.
But since the pot ghetto is so large I've refrained from purchasing any new roses.

RU also has some roses from Robert Rippetoe. His Callista is described as being intensely fragrant. Tempting, very tempting.... but I can't do it.

From our county which is a major producer of tomatoes, there used to be no problems with white flies. Winter got 'em. Then farmers started extending their tomato season (and getting more $$$ for the out of season vine ripened tomatoes) by growing their earliest tomatoes in poly houses, and along with the $$$ came some major white fly problems. Fortunately the tomato growin' is about twenty to thirty miles down wind of my roses.

If you are interested and willing to search (Google or Bing), check out some of the articles on AGDIA, which is a company that makes tests for viruses and other diseases of plants. You can see the PCR and ELISA tests that are available for roses (and for many other plants.) Do you know the word "Synergy"? Not the new age version, but the science based synergy- there are some interesting plant pathology sites out there as well. Briefly, Synergy means that diseaseA has X symptoms and disease B has Y symptoms, but when a plant has diseases A&B, the plant will not have a simple mix of X and Y symptoms, but often will also have new (call them Z) symptoms that may be worse that the sum of X and Y. Where does that leave rose growers? It leaves rose growers wanting to keep their plants as healthy as possible so that no even more damaging symptoms appear. Years ago a simple study was done in California roses. Under optimum conditions, roses with a single virus (as tested for back then) produced ten to fifteen per cent fewer blooms. That, economically, was reason to keep the plants as clean as possible. And to the root to root transmission: Google Scholar papers by Giolino (author), roses, and the time period last ten years.

Nature is complex. Apparently mechanical transmission is not always successful. I wonder if the mites contribute a cofactor that helps the virus overcome the immune system. FW and KP are two roses I am very happy with. They were both planted last year and so far both are showing to be very disease resistant in my no spray garden.

FW is a small plant but has had a number of blooms. KP has bloomed less but is much taller than FW so its energy seems to have gone into growth.

I like both of these roses a lot; they are both actually squeaky clean.

One of the FW I have is sandwiched between sweet alyssum which has grown almost as tall as the FW and a row of zinnias behind that have gotten unruly and are cutting into FW's air and sun. NOne of this seems to bother FW, so I'm leaving it alone to see what happens.

So, so far, so good and I'd like to get Garnet Crest as well sometime.

Did anyone see these in Pat Henry's personal garden? I understand she has a mature plant of FW.

I tried to find Faith Whittlesey in my garden after being out of town for awhile but the zinnias it was planted near had swallowed it. After ripping out two large zinnia plants, this is what I found underneath. I'm really impressed with how clean it is.
