Zone 7 Winter Sow/ Spring Sow ?

I am in zone 7 and this is my first year to wintersow. I was holding off sowing some of the annuals to sow a bit later in the spring. I read the Zone 6 WS thread and find that some in Zone 6 have already WS some of those same annuals. So- is it all right to WS the annuals in Zone 7 this early? Got a snow last night, and we have crazy weather and are subject to get some low temps before March is over, and sometimes into April.

I'm right on the edge of 7B and 8 and I wait a bit to sow the annuals that can't take frost at all (zinnias and such). That's because we have so much warm weather in the winter that things typically sprout within two weeks but we also have sudden hard freezes right up until early April. If I sow the tender annuals too early I have sprouts that can't take the cold. I presume that those in colder parts of the country don't have the problem of things sprouting so early and so it's not a problem to go ahead and get the seeds planted.

One big reason I love wintersowing is that it is so much easier than alternate methods. I avoid the hassle of having to cover or move (or worry about) those eager little sprouts by just waiting a while.

I'll probably take the chance and sow the fussbudgets in late March.

Thanks. I have had the other things I WS'ed out a bit over 2 weeks. I don't have any sprouts at all. I guess I will wait till closer to the end of March to WS the annuals.

OK, thanks, I think I'll give it a whirl then and WS them. Never have grown them from seed before so I wasn't sure what to do. Kmpsmom, our weather here in Zone 6B tends to be sort of similar to Zone 7, so that's great to know you had success with WS'ing them. We had a cool spring and summer here in PA too because of all that rain. Aliska12000, I think I'll hold a few pansy seeds back too, that's a good idea. Maybe I'll sow them in containers in the spring just to see how those work. Thanks again for your follow up posts! Now I just need to get more seed starting mix...

winter sowing in zone 7B?

My apologies. I didn't mean to be that brief. Time and weather permitting, I start sowing seed of perennials, vines, shrubs sometimes trees in late December/early January. I use flats filled with ProMix, pieces of mini blinds to mark name and date. To keep the seed from being washed out by heavy rain, I either keep the flats in frames covered with (recycled) window screens or covered with another flat that has a lattice like bottom. Any container that allows drainage can be use and they can be placed under evergreens for protection.
