I have two Pat Austins - and I hate both. One is in partial shade, blooms still got scorched in 80 to 100 degrees heat. The other was in full sun, but I moved to partial shade recently. The smell is weird, like tobacco mixed with nectarine. The blooms shatter, and I can't cut them for the vase.

Pat Austin looks nice in cool and rainy spring/fall in 50 to 70 degrees. The plus? It's completely healthy with glossy foliage, but I can't speak for its health, since everything is disease-free here, including Golden Celebration and Paul Neyron, due to the lime in my water and lime stones in my soil.

I have both and like my Pat Austin much more than my Carding Mill. Although, my Pat Austin is ownroot, which I greatly prefer. I really like Carding Mill as well, but it doesn't put on as big of a show. Plus, Pat Austin turns a very deep orange here with my red clay.

I have Versigny - peachy-apricot, smells WAY-BETTER than Pat Austin. Versigny lasts longer in the vase. It smells like Nahema with a touch of nectarine. Jay-Jay from Netherlands thinks Nahema smells better than Getrude Jekyll, which puts Versigny' scent above GJ. I have both Nahema and Versigny - I'll pick Versigny for scent that lasts long in the vase - I get high from its heavenly scent. Versigny stands up to 100 degrees heat - bloom didn't get scorched in full sun. This picture is taken after an all-night thunderstorm today:

Pat's my favorite rose but it fries in the heat. Versigny is a gem if you can find it.

I found Carding Mill to be excellent in the heat and also long-lasting in water. It was also a very good bloomer for me in a spot that had sun for much of the day. It doesn't have a great deal of scent if that's important to you.

I purchased Carding Mill in May. It's a beautiful rose, but I'm disappointed it doesn't keep its peach color, it turns more pink after it initially blooms. I do have to say I purchased four DA roses at the same time, Grace, Lady Emma Hamilton, Tea Clipper, and Carding Mill. Out of the four, Carding Mill has had the most blooms. (It's covered with blooms at the moment.) I do have it in a full sun location, which may be one reason it changes color so.

There's one that holds in orange color and bloom doesn't shrink in size like Austins in the heat. It's 2007 Romantica Sweet Promise HT, bloom size is at least 4" in the heat. The scent is heaven: like apple blossoms - and is strong regardless of the weather. Sweet Promise has 19 buds/bloom in our 90 to 100 degrees heat. It's a 4-months old own-root. The bloom lasts 4 to 5 days in the vase, smell great to the end.

Sweet Promise is completely thornless in the upper 3/4 of the bush. Leaves are red and shiny when young. The bush is pretty like Firefighter. Below is Sweet Promise, big orange bloom in the center. Honey Bouquet is lower left, huge bloom with great color. Golden Cel. is upper left - and the rest are Austins blooms that got smaller in summer heat.
