Can I grow Darlow's Enigma in mid to north Florida?

Hi yall,

Still thinking about relocating to Florida, and remembering how rose growing was a tearful misadventure in Pinellas. So am looking north, like north of Ocala this time.

My roses in Oregon get bs, except for Darlow's Enigma, Secret Garden Musk, Westerland and a most fragrant red mystery.

Does anyone know if any of these can be grown in central to north Fla?

Does bs attack every rose and eventually kill it, like in Pinellas? Friends in Marion County can't grow a rose, but that could be his special quirk.

Absolutely both of those varieties can be grown in Central and North Florida. Many more will grow is that area own root, no spray and you will have outstanding roses! I've grown roses in that area for 36 yrs. More questions just ask, there are quite a few of us rose lovers in that neck of the woods that would be most happy to help you have one stunning rose garden!

I have SGMC. It was in full, glaring Florida sun, and didn't like it. I moved it to where it gets shade in the p.m., and it's much happier. I also have Westerland, but it's still in the pot. So far no black spot. I have very little black spot unless we have several days in a row of overcast, rainy weather, but then I only grow two HTs, Elina and Mr. Lincoln. Most of my roses are Chinas, Noisettes and Teas. I'm in Polk County.

My Darlow' Enigma doesn't appear to mind anything I need to do. Wonderful healthy forgiving plant/tree. This is very interesting. I grow several of my roses woven through each other, and want long canes in order to do this.At the decline of each season, I begin removing spent leaves , then when I can see to trace the cane back to it's origin, I remove the small from inside the mass. I've wondered about the tops, but have only pruned what I can reach from standing on the roof of our home, more to protect the roof than aid the plants. Now I'm feeling a bit of panic, am I creating what will become a serious monster? This particular clump near our home for shade, perfume and beauty,in order starting at the front door then to the south/right, is made of Darlow's Enigma, Sally Holmes, Penelope, Wingthorn baby, Madam Cochet, Snowbird, with Opal Breuner & Perle de Or in sun openings.

I've been hoping some of the more expert rose growers would have an answer to your "disease resistance" question. Since you haven't had any input from others, I'll try to give you some hope. If you're from the interior of BC, you are most likely in awe of the disease problems plaqued by lower mainland rose growers, and I fear with the late damp conditions of late, this spring will be no exception. And of course there are few options for Canadian rose growers to use to combat disease. What I have found though, is that by carefully selection of cultivars, and some use of Safer's Defender (12% sulfur) I can keep blackspot reasonably under control. You may wish to check out the ADR roses on Kordes website. A few that I currently grow are Berolina, Eliza, Grande Amore, Aprikola, Lions-Rose, Rugelda, Alchymist, Moonlight and Laguna. There are many roses of course that exhibit reasonable resistance to disease. When choosing, I think it's probably best to go for the newer cultivars as they seem to be fairly disease resistant for at least the first few years. Please keep in mind, that I'm not expert in the growing of roses and this only my observations. I don't what class of roses you are interested in, so I'll add that the Gallicas are pretty much bullet proof in our climate, and of course it's always nice to have a few of the reliable species roses too. Cath, I have experience with both these roses, but SGM was not in my gadern for long time. I am not sure it will be hardy in zone 6a. It was marginally hardy here for me on the border of 6b and 7a. I had DE in half shade and SGM in full sun, so can't answer your question about performance in shade. DE was always satisfied with semi shade, bloomed a lot and grew fast. I lost it several years ago to RRD. I was really upset about this loss. It was healthy happy and fragrant rose. I grew it as a big freestanding shrub. It touched my second floor windows, approx 12x12 feet, really hude plant. My SGM was small. It suffered every winter from dieback and was very BS prone. I don't spray my roses now, so probably with spray program it would grow better, but w/o spraying it was miserable here. I loved its fragrance, but I never felt really soory when it finally died due to BS and winter dieback. Olga

odinthor... ...yes, the water is very much still here, in the Fens where I am... surrounded by rivers, streams, ditches and dykes... and a fair bit of flooding in winter, however further south and east in East Anglia, in the counties of Essex and Suffolk, water is scarcer and it can be quite dry, the driest parts of this country. ...Even here in the northern section with the Fens, we have had little rain this year, except a couple of nights ago when we had electric storms and what seemed like 2 inches of rain in about an hour.... to make up for the 97 degrees we got the other day... this rainfall was manna from heaven for me, as I've been watering my garden with the hose since March... ...obviously, this doesn't compare with drought in other areas but it can be difficult here to get things established.. ..Darlow's Enigma doesn't appeal to me at all as a rose I'd want to grow, but I would also like to know its real name, out of curiosity... ..oh I've just checked on HMF... 'Cascadia' [1922] is thought to be the true identity... Madame d'Arblay x Bloomfield Abundance... that's quite a nice name I think....

Oh what a thrill you are giving me! So happy to hear you are rose growers in Fla. One more reason to get back there.

Own root is the best way to go I'm discovering. DE, Wl, SGMM are own root. Don't think the red (turns dark pink in heat) mystery is. It has been moved at least five times, so one more surely won't set it back too far. It just might have to come in the Prius with me instead of van!

I'll tell my Dunnellon friend there is hope for him.

Roses grow great here in Fla., I don't understand why your friend had so much trouble, I have abt. 150 now mostly grafted on Fortuniana, maybe that was his problem, own-root in this area can be decimated by nematodes in the soil, or perhaps he was trying to grow a type unsuited to this climate.. but once you learn, they can be a terrific year-round garden adventure, and wish you good-luck...sally
