Why did my Frozen in Time Bloom?

TammyPie - Hybrid AV do not have a blooming season, they bloom all year and with good light and fertilizing they will do it 10 months out of the year. Frozen in Tine has partially green blossoms - the interesting part about this type of blossoms is that the last forever and that they often have "false pregnancy". Even if not pollinated they form an empty seed pod. Of course there is always a chance that it has seeds - if you have thrips (hope not) or if you disturbed the flower while you were working with this plant and the pollen got out of the pollen sacks and to the stamen creating viable seeds. If you leave the seed pod on - in several month it will dry - and you can open and try to get some seeds out of it - if they are there. It is an excellent heavy blooming variety. Irina

Thanks everyone for your thoughtful comments. I'm afraid there is going to be some major cane loss this winter. The temps really dropped off last night, and right now the wind is howling....its way below zero windchills. We lost much of the snow with the rain the other day and yesterday's snowfall only amounted to less than 3". At my elevation the wind plays a huge factor in winter damage, and the poor roses never really went into normal dormancy. We've had these below zero windchills a little while ago, then it 'warmed' up some, now back into the deep freezer. I have learned not to panic if I have to cut everything back to nearly the ground come spring...especially with the modern roses. I used to go through great pains to winter-protect, but once your rose count gets into the hundreds you have to let it slide. Roses are more resilient than some people think, and will grow fast and bloom if well-nourished. I always get a chuckle when people ask how I can possibly grow hundreds of roses in my zone, that roses don't grow here. My roses never got the memo. Celeste

I tried to pick one that I liked best and can't--they're all so beautiful. Maybe the weeper.... When I had to relandscape a property a couple years ago I read that you needed conifers for winter interest. I did a mental eyeroll and thought, "Christmas trees, how boring". Then I started looking at them. And reading. And haven't quit yet. At nurseries I now have to force myself to check out the other (deciduous) stuff. Totally, totally hooked. I want to thank all you guys who post pictures of your beautiful gardens.

first, I went to Photoshop and dropped photobucket,seemed to much work for me. photoshop much easier at least for me. thanks to all those who tried to help me with photobucket. Next, Frozen In Time; I feed with Miracle-Gro Rose Plant Food (18-24-16) I mix the small part of spoon with gallon of water and use when top of soil mixture is dry. Usually once a week in my house as I keep house pretty warm in Winter. No special care was given to this AV as I have found that it truly is EASY to care for. I have it under fluorescent lights, one being a grow light and the other is called a sun light. About 12 -14 inches off of plants. I must say that this is my favorite AV and have given many starter plants away to family and friends. Glad you all have enjoyed my Frozen In Time. Pembroke

Mine is about one half that size...but the blooms seems to have a purplish tint where yours is solid white in the bloom.

I'm hoping to have mine ready to enter in Raleigh come spring.

talking about blooms of different color, my Mom has a Frozen In Time that I gave her that the first flourish of blooms has the purple cast to them and the second flourish has the white cast to them. very interesting to look at. Pembroke

Day, I'm not much of a fan of green violets - But I could make an exception with this one. Good job, Pem. Is it true that their blooms last longer?

Bet there's a run on Miracle-Gro Rose Plant Food. LOL

Mac: I hardly ever take a bloom off this plant because of wilt or anything else. As you can see in the picture I just ler her go. I did have to open the center just a little so the light could enter. Pembroke

I once had an AV called Frozen in Time. At the time I had several AV's. When I moved 7 years ago most of my AV's died and I have only 2 left. I repotted them in new AV mix and removed the roots, did a drastic overhaul on them, now they're growing well. One of them bloomed. Light green in the outer edges, and white in the center. I wonder if this is Frozen in Time. The leaves are slightly variegated.

pembroke, what an AWESOME violet. It is beautiful. I had Frozen in Time two years ago, but lost it when my entire collection died. Come Spring I'm goind to try this one again. It is so beautiful, Thanks for sharing.
