Frozen in time.

Not Lake Tahoe but it might as well be. Six weeks of long hard winter here in Kansas City with no let up in sight. There is no global warming here where I live. So far all the marginal zone conifers have survived intact. In six weeks we should be out of the woods, so to say. Have big plans for additions to my garden. Will share when time premits.

Wow, I just love your yard! By the way what are the large trees in the background? Looks like an excellent privacy/windbreak screen. How far apart were they planted? There's no snow here in eastern PA yet, although we are awaiting a 6-8 inch dumping of snow this evening, so I guess we'll see. I just love the look of conifers covered in snow. :)

The background conifers are Juniperus virginiana 'Canaertii'. They were 5 feet tall when I planted them in 1981. A total of 13 were planted on 10 ft centers and they are now 35-40 ft tall. A majior highway backs up to my property and they do a good job of screening out noise and provide protection in a number of ways for conifers an companion plants I have backed up to them. They have never has any disease problems or any other issues.

The purple is actually completely normal for Frozen in Time. Here's the official description that the hybridizer submitted to the African Violet Society of America: Frozen in Time (9167) 02/03/2003 (Lyndon Lyon Greenhouses/Sorano) Single-semidouble white star/variable lavender tinge; green edge. first, I went to Photoshop and dropped photobucket,seemed to much work for me. photoshop much easier at least for me. thanks to all those who tried to help me with photobucket. Next, Frozen In Time; I feed with Miracle-Gro Rose Plant Food (18-24-16) I mix the small part of spoon with gallon of water and use when top of soil mixture is dry. Usually once a week in my house as I keep house pretty warm in Winter. No special care was given to this AV as I have found that it truly is EASY to care for. I have it under fluorescent lights, one being a grow light and the other is called a sun light. About 12 -14 inches off of plants. I must say that this is my favorite AV and have given many starter plants away to family and friends. Glad you all have enjoyed my Frozen In Time. Pembroke

Great shot. Were you on the roof or in a second story window? Would have been mighty tricky to scale a snow covered roof!!

I tried to pick one that I liked best and can't--they're all so beautiful. Maybe the weeper....
When I had to relandscape a property a couple years ago I read that you needed conifers for winter interest.
I did a mental eyeroll and thought, "Christmas trees, how boring".
Then I started looking at them. And reading. And haven't quit yet.
At nurseries I now have to force myself to check out the other (deciduous) stuff.
Totally, totally hooked. I want to thank all you guys who post pictures of your beautiful gardens.

How old is the 'Jade Butterfly' ginkgo? Or, how long has the tree been in your yard. Has the tree been slow growing, relatively speaking?

I just purchased a 'Majestic Butterfly' ginkgo for delivery this spring. 'MB' is the variegated form of 'JB'. Your tree is very nicely branched.

forgot to say... love your yard. What a beautiful landscape to gaze upon. Very nicely done.

Also, what is the weeping conifer, in the back, center, of the photo?

Hello Mike,

The 'Jade Butterfly' has been in my yard 3 years. A slow grower. About a 10 year old tree.

The weeper in the background is Cupressus glabra ' Raywood's Weeping'.
