Comments (16)Alrighty. I did a little reading on the two ingredients. The laurel ether sulfate is a surfactant (foaming soap). Surfactants disrupt the ability of animal membranes to exchange gases-i.e. breathe. The fish apparently were exposed to a high enough dose to essentially suffocate them. The survivors could have some temporary membrane damage to the gills resulting in impaired "breathing". Make sure their water is highly aerated. I've heard that hydrogen peroxide changes to oxygen (and water) when added to water. Possibly that would add additional oxygen to the fishes' water but I don't personally know enough about it to advise about using it. Perhaps someone else will. The other listed ingredient-cocamidopropyl betaine-may cause some irritation with prolonged exposure. This ingredient may also have nitrosamines as a possible contaminant which does have a list of nasty long-term effects but probably not present in great enough concentration to worry about. (Nitrosamines is also the concern about eating too much hotdogs, sausage, etc.) To clean up the pond-I would use water to spray down the sides and bottom of the pond which would also loosen any dead algae and get rid of that water, but I don't believe scrubbing would add much additional benefit. Unless you've got a lot of dead algae, of course. Good luck-let us know how it all goes. Kathy...See MoreFish Tail Rot Problems
Comments (16)I have been treating with both everyday yet including today. I think they recommend you treat for a week on the label. Just noticed the label said peel back for more info and I did. It just tells how safe the products are and which of them is best for each problem. It did say to turn off the UV during treatment, which I had not done. No way to turn my UV off as its all one unit. Turned everything off right now while I think about it but I can't leave it. I found one of my shubunkins floating dead in the pond this morning. This one was mostly moving slowley the past few days, enough for me to notice but if harrased, it would move quickly so I never thought anything was wrong with it. Just that it was a slow poke. It didn't have signs of any type of fungus or infection that I could see....See MoreLost almost all my fish! - What happened???
Comments (11)Cigarette theory is a very good one. Teens do stupid destructive things to entertain themselves. I found a kid from down our street (18 years old) spitting in our pond to see if the fish would eat it. I can't even tell you how furious I was at him. Additionally I couldn't believe someone who I thought had the same love and respect for the environment would do something like that - but he did. Why? To show off to a 7-year old. At any rate, your fish were definitely poisoned. The question becomes, what kind of poison? IÂm not sure alcohol would have the concentration needed, but there are other things a person keeps in the house and in the garage that could have done it. A little bleach, toilet cleaner, lighter fluid, weed sprays etc. If there was no insecticidal/pesticidal spraying with a lot of rain to wash the chemicals into the pond (that day), then it is 100% something the kids did. Keep in mind, often the host of a party will not have control of everyone there, so he truly may not know what people poured or tossed in there. If I were you and it were my kid, I would tell him you did extensive research on-line and have determined it was something someone added at the party. If he throws a party he needs to accept responsibility for the actions of the people that attend. The ramifications of the fact he has irresponsible people attending his party, is it raises the likelihood of someone driving from his party (your house) while tipsy or drunk and then getting in an accident hurting or killing someone. Each State varies, but an incidence like that would make him (and you by proxy) liable. Teens being what they are tend to learn the hard way and maybe this is his wake-up call. Though we always wash our hands after applying mosquito spray, I highly doubt that could have been the cause unless they were spraying it straight into the pond. One again, people do stupid things when they're drunk and in crowds. My background is from the University of Michigan in Microbiology, Genetics, and Ecology. So I do know a thing or two about this :)...See Moreaquarium stand or filter
Comments (6)Sherry, I'm sorry. I didn't mean to insult. You original post seemed so casual in mentioning weeks of neglect, with no explanation of why. We must always care first for our family. As Gary wrote, level the stand, but if you are going to empty the tank and start over, after you shim the stand, if it's still not perfect, another cheap item you could pick up at the home center would be a piece of 3/4" thick styrofoam insulation, to lay on top, under the tank. Once the tank has been refilled, the weight of the water will cause the foam to compress under any point that may be the least lower than another and make that last adjustment to absolutely dead level. It's also a good shock absorber....See Morewoeisme
