"biocontrol" is one method that one can try for blackspot. The following may be useful in putting the concept of biocontrol into layman terms: "Disease-suppressive soil microorganisms have been found in many places. In monoculture wheat the severity of "take all" disease often decreases within three to five years. This phenomenon is known as "take all decline," and is considered an effective natural control. Although the mechanisms are not completely understood, the decline is associated with changes in soil microorganisms that compete with and prey on the fungus. Melon plants grown in the Chateaurenard region of France do not show Fusarium wilt symptoms even though the fungus is present in the soil. Soils with suppressive characteristics tend to develop slowly and are usually found in fields where perennial crops or monocultures have been grown for many years. Suppressiveness may be lost if the monoculture is interrupted even for one year, or if pesticides are applied. For example, researchers first recognized soils suppressive to cereal-cyst nematode when nematode numbers increased after application of a broad-spectrum biocide. Many species of fungi and bacteria in the genera Trichoderma, Streptomyces, Bacillus and Pseudomonas suppress diseases, but at this time only a few strains are commercially available. Additional commercial products may be available soon, however, as this is currently an active research area." We tested whether there was evidence for a secreted auxin inhibitor, for enhanced auxin degrdn., or for altered auxin sensitivity. Our results provide no support for any of these mechanisms. Trichoderma secretions inhibited growth, whereas an auxin inhibitor would increase growth. These tests indicated that Trichoderma-colonized roots had a faster max. growth rate, but an unchanged response to auxin." -------------------------------------------- Even if naturally occurring trichoderma harzianum only reduces the amount of blackspot fungus by 10 to 20 % (the numbers are just a guess), there are probably going to be a number of different "friendly" fungi in an organic garden. Following infection by D. rosae numbers of microbes generally showed a marked increase, but this was not always sustained. In vivo expts. showed that only 10-20% effectiveness of the compds. against Diplocarpon rosae was found, when chitosan at 0.2-0.4 mg/cm3 was used for rose spraying. Also spraying of willow 2 times at weekly intervals against Melampsora epitea decreased the mean no. of rust pustules per leaf. Spraying of dieffenbachia 24 h before inoculation with M. roridum resulted in significant decrease of necrosis spread on leaves. Oh, dear - when I saw Miriam's name on the post title, I was hoping against hope that she was being honored and given another award, but my fears came true. I have met Miriam many times at HRG meetings and the Celebration, and she deserved all of the honors and awards she has received in recent years. My personal fond memories of her start in the early 1990s, when I knew nothing about all of the old roses in my garden, and had joined HRG at the Celebration to try and find out something about them. We started getting the local HRG newsletter, which at that time was written by Miriam. The rose and non-rose stories and asides in it were so hilarious, I would read them out loud to my husband, and we started referring to Miriam (just to each other, and with affection) as the "crazy rose lady". We found that we really looked forward to her newsletters, and always read them together when they came (he is not really interested in roses - he loved the funny stories). I just walked into the house and told him that "the crazy rose lady has died", and he reacted with real sadness and regret, as do I. Jackie

It is a good list. My range is more global, extending to all my plants, which include a lot besides roses, though they're the most important part. This description doesn't entirely fit me, and I would say I'm a bit more sane than the rosarian described here. BUT then I remember the hose-fed shower out in the middle of the propagating beds, so that we water the baby plants as we shower. In our bathing suits, under the cold water. And the pots of succulents I loaded up this morning at 5:30 and hauled down to the big garden and tucked under the roses where DH can reach them with the hose fed from our neighbors' pond, which doesn't reach their old home under the pergola. Wading around in the reeds and muck of that same pond to get the hose set up. Hauling, for the last several months, pot after pot of rinse and shower warmup water, out to the propagating beds, down the hill to the shade garden. Is this normal? Perhaps not. Is this passion? Yeah, I think it is.

Here are a few from a warm weather gardener (who has done ALL of these things): Any tiny rose volunteer sprout which emerges in the garden anywhere (including in the middle of the lawn) must NOT be pulled up (or mowed down!) until it has grown big enough to produce mature blooms, and then also not touched until I find out whether it repeats or not, and then it might be moved to a large pot in order to observe it further, .... If a climbing rose gets too big for its trellis, build a bridge for it to the nearest building or large tree. Water the roses if there is a drought and hot weather, if necessary at midnight. In order to do this, talk your DH into building some sort of system to pipe bath & shower water into the garden automatically. If your water bill is huge because of tiered pricing, pay it and cut the household budget somewhere (anywhere) else. Volunteer to help your next door neighbors with that annoying "hell strip" in front of their houses, if those strips are obviously being neglected and have run to weeds. That way you can plant them FULL of roses. If there are telephone poles or large street signs in the hell strips, they make great structures for climbing roses, as do street trees. If your next door neighbor has a neglected rose within sight of your garden, beg them to let you prune/take care of it, as the poor thing is suffering. When you have run out of sunny spots to plant roses, you can plant climbers in full shade, and then sweet talk them into getting taller really fast, at which time you can guide them up a tree (on your property or the neighbor's), the neighbor's fence, or your or the neighbor's house.
