Cuttings

Hi all,

Will everyone please look at the comments on the message about cuttings and let me know what you think. I have as many of you also recommended Rachels Reflections to many here on the GW. Do you feel that mentioning any site that sells plants and supplies and gives good growing information is "pushing the site"? I feel that Jmcat was wrong for chastising Korina about her recommendation of Rachel's Reflections.

What do you think?

I see nothing wrong with mentioning where one might find more information on a subject as that is why we are all here isn't it? to learn and share. Merely mentioning a site doesn't constitute "pushing it" or advertising it. I don't feel you or Korina have done anything wrong and I for one have gained much information from both of you over the years to help me grow better violets as you are both very knowledgeable on the subject as are the people that post info on Rachel's Reflections, I belong to 8 different violet/gesneriads forums and if not for someone mentioning them I wouldn't have found many of them with the basic internet search.

I think jmcat was chastising alankgore for linking to his landscaping service's site, not korina for linking to Rachel's Reflections. That was my impression, anyway. I got the idea that alankgore had been spamming a few boards with it.

The method you describe is how I save many tropical plants sold as annuals. Take cuttings for winter, plant outside for summer. Repeat in the fall. Coleus is a classic example of this. Also works well for many house plants, especially the creeping, non-woody kinds. When they look ratty, it's usually easier to start a new pot of cuttings than try to repot/rehabilitate the roots. Tradescantia zebrina (WJ) is the classic example of this. Theoretical discussions can be interesting, but not necessarily helpful across all kinds of plants. What are you propagating?

Root Cuttings? Not stem cuttings.

No stem attached at all. The root came from the bottom of the pot, it was growing out the drainage hole. When I moved the pot it came up out of the ground, so I cut it off at the bottom of the pot. Placed it in a seed starting mix with the top of the root level with the top of the soil, put a ziplock baggie over it, held on by a rubber band, for humidity. And sat it in a south facing window. It now has about a inch of new growth on it. Sorry, I didn't take any pictures, wish I had.

Usually you would cut right at a joint. Let the cutting callus for a few days. Keep soil rather dry for the cutting. Beware the sap!

I'm sorry about not thinking to say in my post that I was speaking of Alankgore, not Korina. I'm sorry for any trouble that my mistake caused. I just posted a clarification on the original post, which hopefully clears up any confusion about my posting.

I would say most of us on this av forum are only trying to help others with their questions, if we know a little something, we share, and that includes other places with information, places to purchase supplies, etc. It is not for personal gain...If it was a big infraction with Spike, we would have known it before now. Almost all the forums have the same thing, links to other places, there is even a box to type in url and links. I say we just keep on doing what we do.

Hi Jmcat,
I reread your posting and realized that you were not making a point about Rachel's Reflections even though she sells AVs and is a business for profit. Two other things bother me about your posting and maybe you can clear it up for all of us. Number one, this is the first time I have ever seen a posting here in AV land by you and wonder if you came to this forum to receive information or are you tracking Alans postings to get him off the GW. I also am bothered by your way of growing AV's from leaves. You are really behind times. Most of us here no longer start plants in water. What that does is produce water roots and when the leaf or plantlets are put into soil mix they have to redevelop roots all over again. I will make the same offer to you that I have to Alan (who emailed me for the info). I have a few sheets that I pass out to people when I go out to speak. So if you send me your email I will send them to you.

Fred- As far as your first question; no, the purpose for my coming was not to find Mr. Gore. I have posted here once or twice before, but have mainly just visited without posting. Thanks for straightening me out on rooting leaves. I just sent you an e-mail on those sheets, so hopefully it will show up soon. The original reason for rooting those leaves was that one of my AVs appears to be dying, and I was hoping to be able to save cuttings of the plant. Maybe I'll finally stop procrastinating and start a post on what's wrong with that plant.
