Dalar, I agree w/Webkat..place in moist soil..set in medium light (no direct sun) and then add plastic atop plant or make something that helps w/humidity. Crotons are high-humidity loving plants. Sounds like your Croton was growing a seed..lucky you..Flowers and seed take nutrients from leaves..I believe a dose of fertilizer would help, and of course sunlight. Toni

In my experience this has not been a big money maker. You can make some money, and it is enjoyable work, but I know few people doing this at the level you describe that can make equal to even a part-time job's income. If you live in an area with few places for customers to locate healthy houseplants then you might be on to something - in my area there are plenty of low cost alternatives. I've always said that there's a difference between growing a plant, and selling a plant. One is much harder than the other. You may find that it would be better for you to teach houseplant care classes or give advice over the internet or something else completely that is related to houseplants but doesn't rely on a crop being grown by you. I sell plants that I grow. I grow all sorts of plants including houseplants. My top sellers are perennials (flowers and small shrubs), herbs for food, bedding annuals, houseplants, and in last place herbs for medicine, in that order. In houseplants I sell a lot of flashy tropical color like Begonias, Nerve Plant, Wandering Jew and Pepperomias and not so much blooming plants. I sell a lot of boston ferns and asparagus ferns and I sell a lot of cholorphytum or airplane plant (some folks call them spider plants). Mostly I think folks buy them because I explain how good they are at cleaning the air inside your house. None of these are what I would consider quick to propagate and it is very hard to grow a lush filled out 'finished' plant without a greenhouse and full sun with lots of careful watering (in other words - lots of work). It is easier to sell small starts or rooted cuttings but they don't bring much money. Good luck

Their is no reason to try stem-cutting rooting with Goji berry plants since their is an abundance of suckers to create new plants. If you need some, I have a bunch.

I have never tried this, but was reading about it in some textbooks on propagation my DH brought home. They say you can use the smaller feeder roots or the larger ones, cutting them between 1"-3". Put them on a couple of inches of substrate and cover with and inch or two of medium. The cuttings can be laid horizontally or vertically. If placed vertically be sure to get the polarity correct so that it's how they grew naturally ie. bottom part of root facing downward. It's also suggested to cut the bottom at an angle for roses. Concerning the planting medium, it was not specified, but referred to as "planting" medium as opposed to "rooting" medium, which I take to mean a more nutrient rich mix. I've done this often with other easy rooting plants such as those in the mint family with great success. (Too great sometimes!) : ) Let us know if you try it and your results. Most of mine aren't large enough yet, or if they are they root easily and truthfully, I don't need anymore New Dawn. : ( However, I have to transplant a huge one in March, so maybe I'll try this out. I don't think she'd miss a few roots.
