Rogue Valley Roses

I was in Ashland, OR the other day visiting relatives, when I remembered hearing about this old rose nursery. So, we went to visit it (open to the public on Wednesday afternoons). WOW! It is on top of a hill/ridge with amazing views in all directions. To get there you drive through a beautiful agricultural valley with farms & lots of flowers and roses - really lovely. The nursery appears to be on several acres surrounding a single family house. They have several different rose gardens, all of which have these fantastic views. Definitely worth a visit!

I purchased a "Jeri Jennings", mostly because I have always wanted a Paul Barden rose, and it is described as a hybrid musk rose, which do well in our climate.

Does anyone know if this rose can handle some shade? My full sun locations are already stuffed with roses, but I have some tea roses growing happily in an area that gets a couple of hours of morning sun under some very tall trees.

Jackie, my own 'Jeri Jennings' do just fine with less than all day sun. The one plant of it that's out in full blasting heat on the hillside isn't completely happy, and I'm planning to move it to a morning-sun location.

My Jeri Jennings is growing in dappled light all day. It's only two, so it's at the "creep" stage but healthy, blooming and growing well. Very happy with it. It would probably be larger in more sunlight, but like you, I've already allocated the sunshine spots. Good luck and thanks for sharing the lovely description of RVR. I haven't been able to get down there this year and I love the location of the stunning garden.

The RVRS ARS Rose Show is scheduled for June 6th at the Josephine County Fairgrounds, Grants Pass Oregon. Arts and Crafts Building, 1-4pm. Pulease...you guys. I am laughing so hard. I can think of so many forum members who make much better bouquets than I ever could. The thing about RR and Ascot is you just need a lot of blooms to stuff in a vase--the blooms do it all for you--plonks for the lazy. If its flowering now, it cant possibly be ’Marianne’. Sadly, it appears that many (most?) plants of ’Marianne’ RVR has sold in recent times are mislabeled plants. Be sure to ID your plant and follow up if you’ve got the wrong rose. @Meg-zone8aOR My guess us that its an Austin, given your description of the fragrance.

Thank you both so much! Now I know exactly where to plant it. (I love the fact that so many roses not only do not need "6 hours of direct sun" per day, but actually don't like it! Another rose piece of "conventional wisdom" that is wrong ...too bad there are so many of them!
