Growing an Autumn Blaze Maple from a Branch

I've got a beautiful Autumn Blaze Maple and heard that you could grow trees from the branches. Is this true and please how is it done (in detail)? I've got a common area that no one wants to take care of and we're allowed to plant in them. Instead of paying for trees, I would love to be able just to grow a few from my exisiting one.

Maples from cuttings is a specialist procedure, even in commercial practice grafting is more usual with named forms. Otherwise plants are raised from seeds, when duplication of specific named forms is not the goal.

Not to mention it can also be patent infringement.

Maples are normally grafted or course but if you want detailed directions, search online for "how to take cuttings of plants" or "how to graft plants".
What you're going to find is that the expense, hassle and equipment/supplies you'll need to produce tree #1, is going to far exceed the $10 or so that it would cost to order a potted freeman maple from a mail order nursery or the $20 it would cost to buy one from big box garden centre and it will take weeks, if not months before you have a tiny twig with some roots growing out of it.

I hate to sound stuffy, but anyone trained in arboriculture knows why pruning a branch mid-way (mid-node) is not preferrable. Trees are not hedges. If you want long term structural integrity, you don't want to cut tree branches off mid-way (mid-node) if there is an option. The tree in the photos does not appear to show a strong enough "twig" on the rogue branch that could take over and become a sound sructural branch in the form of this young tree. The tree looks vigorous enough that one of the other lateral branches below the rogue branch will take off and become a structural (scaffold) branch and even out the crown. They won't straighten out but the north facing buds will give the plant the vertical look is destined to display. Those bent vertical branches will become horizontal or laterals branches in the next few years.

'Autumn Blaze' Maple Budding On Trunk, Branches Dormant

Considering you have so many sprouts from below the the first branch set, you can select ANY of the sprouts from the trunk and make that into your new tree. I have had two instances with the same tree of a similar but different situation: I have a red/silver cross (Acer x freemanii) that I dug as a 6" seedling from my grandmother's garden. Planted it into the ground in late October of 2009 to over-winter it safely. A rabbit came during that winter and ate the stem to 1" from the ground. Determined as I was, I dug it up, potted it up and let it sprout last spring. I nubbed off every sprout but the one closest to the cut end, and let that sprout shoot up for the duration of summer 2010. It grew almost to 3' tall. In December 2010, after the little tree had turned the most amazing shades of hot red, we had a 4 day unprecedented snow fall (snow squalls, lake effect snow) the likes of which snapped the stem to 6" from the ground (in a new pot, in the ground again for the winter). As soon as the ground was thawed in March, I lifted the pot and kept it on the deck/patio. Again, the stem was enthusiastic about leafing out, and all the dormant buds were activated. I nubbed them away, only keeping the highest one on the stem. It has grown nearly 2' in the past 6 weeks. The wound has healed over completely and the stem is growing like a weed. Moral of the story: I'm determined to grow this silly weed of a hybrid. Moral 2 of the story: Even when you lose the top of a tree for an uncontrollable reason (weather, animals, etc) you can still succeed. Pick a vigorous stem and cut away all others. This stem will become the new trunk and will grow a considerable amount this summer. Remove the entire dead top to about half an inch from the shoot you will keep. The removal of all others will force all the root energy into one stem. It will hopefully prepare for winter and drop its leaves in October. Your one stem will branch profusely in the spring next year. It will look a little funny (well, a lot funny) but you won't have thrown away a perfectly good plant.

Because of the time of year - tree is going dormant and dropping leaves - I think you should be OK. The chemical agents in this product, primarily pyrethroides, can have significant phytotoxic effects on plant foliage. It will damage foliage in season and cause leaf loss but it won't kill the tree and there should be no ill effects next season. There are also a lot of petroleum derivatives in the spray including ispropynol and that's what's giving it the strong chemical odor. Plus the product is extremely flammable. FYI, wasps and hornets do not overwinter but die soon after the first frost and with the coming of cold weather. You could have just waited a few weeks and then taken down and removed the nests without concern and with no need to spray.

You can grow a patented cultivar for PERSONAL use. It's covered under the fair use clause. In the case of Autumn Balze and the related Autumn Fantasy, they are very often grown from cuttings due to delayed graft incompatibility. However growing these from cuttings is a long tedious process that you will not want to do (search for it on Google and you will find it). I'm not going to outline it here (much to long), you can do the Google search and find it like I did. Lastly, not all trees can be propagated from cuttings.

I didn't know that. A lot of the tags threaten you for duplicating.

I also never heard of the Autumn Balze cultivar.
I'm guessing that is a heavily seeding variety.

I've never heard of a fair use clause that applies to patent law. The fair use doctrine that I am familiar with applies to copyright law, not patents.

Do you have any reference that you can point me to that gives more detail on fair use of patents?

I don't have a reference, but have read this a couple times and made a mental note. As for the tags, what else would they say? As for what I have read a couple times, it was clear if you sold or even traded or in any way conveyed resultant plants beyond yours own use, then it would be a violation. Now as for the accuracy of what I've read a couple of times????????

'Fair Use' does not apply to plant patents. Nonetheless, rooting most maple branches is, as stated above, for the experienced.

"Autumn Blaze is a sterile male hybrid" - not true, Autumn Blaze will definitely produce seeds. I've grown seedlings from Autumn Blaze, and they turned out to be variable in fall color and form. (I planted some of the seedlings in a commons area, as a matter of fact).

Musicalperson makes a good point that Autumn Blaze are readily available and normally very reasonably priced. They are, however, becoming over-planted. Maybe consider several different species for diversity.
