Usually if it is a cultivar, such as 'Dynamite', it would be labeled with the name.

A named hybrid will be properly labeled. Yours is a seedling crape myrtle.

what do you mean by that rhizo? i don't know much about gardening and trees,is the reason i come here to find out what you all think.and if it comes from a seed does that mean we don't know how tall it's going to be and such?

There are no rules for under-labeling. Kosar and De Vos magnolia hybrids, all introduced with full individual cultivar names have been on the market for years from some suppliers as "Stellata Hybrid" and so on. Skimmia japonica 'Dwarf Male' and 'Dwarf Female' are possibly similar examples. All it takes is for one grower to lose track of the cultivar name or not get it in the first place, put quantities of stock out with fudged names like these.

'Dynamite' cultivar CMs are fairly new in comparison.

If a grower or supplier mislabled it, when it was really an either registered or patented cultivar as new as 'dynamite' CM, I certainly would not trust or respect that supplier or the store selling his/her products. Thus they certainly would not get my business.

If you like the CM, and do not care to know how tall it should grow, what color its bark will change to as it matures, if it will have pealing bark, if it is mildew resistant, when it is normally supposed to begin blooming, how hardy it is for your USDA cold hardy zone, if it is a weeping, upright or spreading type, and if it is a dwarf, shrub, or tree type then keep it.

If not knowing any of the above facts does bother you then return it and get your money back. Then go to a reputable nursey and find one correctly labeled, and which most consistantly exhibits the characteristics you need for the area you have prepared for it to grow.

How they will turn out eventually is also not completely predictable. You also can't be certain how a named cultivar will perform under your site conditions and the circumstances a particular specimen has experienced, both before you bought it (propagation methods affect later growth, as does how plant was trained and maintained) and after you plant it yourself.

Yes, but knowing the exact parentage and if the tree was kept true to a cultivar name, does have an affect on knowing what range of growth habit and pattern it will take. A dwarf cultivar should never end up being a 15-20 foot shrub, any more than a semi dwarf would be expected to grow to 30 feet tall or more. Also A cultivar like the CM 'Tuscarora' if grown true to proper parentage, should never turn out to be a weeping form of Crape Myrtle.

So while I agree with the points your are making, BBoy, I still consider it more important to at least know a cultivar name which has generally consistant form and growth habits.

If I want a full fledged single trunked 30 foot or taller potential growing CM tree or a three trunked 20-25 foot tall potential growing CM and purchased a vaguely named CM like Red Crape myrtle, I would be extremely sad to have to wait 8-10 years or so before finding out for sure that it only had the potential to grow 8-10 feet tall, or to find out even sooner if it was easily infested with the diseases and mildew problems that some CMs are not resistant to.

Then again isn't it better to know how resitant the CM you purchase is to winter damage. Many of the more respected Cultivar named CMS have been tested for all the above issues, and usually perform in a reasonable expected range of the testing results, depending on the micro climate where the CM is planted.

As long as you like them and you space them according to the description of final size on the tag, you should be fine.

Actually, trees and shrubs of all height categories, including dwarf and semi-dwarf may become much larger than commonly seen when old enough. It is simply a factor of time, where and when site conditions and other circumstances (like not being bulldozed away or killed by pests or bad weather) have permitted a specimen to live a comparatively long while. Lagerstroemia indica 32'-60' high have been recorded from various US locations.
