Just discovered RU has its sale going on since yesterday thru July 15. All one gallon own roots are $10 each!

I called and they are shipping me one of each:

Lily I made a mistake about the thistles. I have two kinds, Canada Thistle and Purple thistle. The latter is the kind that grows 10 feet tall, has really thick stalks like pokeweed and puts out those big spikey purple "flowers." Canada is the lower spreading kind that over takes lawns. Both are very invasive though. Thanks Virginia, I hadn't heard of that one but will check it out. I've tried various weed gadgets and even torches, but thistle have obnoxiously deep roots and if you don't get it all it's a waste of time.... like pokeweed and docks. At my other place, which was brown clay, it was a little easier to dig weeds, but here I'm red clay on rock. Being in the foothills of the mountains gives me the rocky layers with a helping of that famous bright orange Carolina red clay on top. Hard as cement when dry, sticky as glue when wet. When the excavation team was here for some work, I was surprised at the boulders and rocks they unearthed. Very pretty though and the smaller ones, wagon to barrel sized, are in front of the house as my bed edges. Big bed edges...lol! The larger ones were used to shore up an old bridge on the lower part of the property. I have to cross a year around creek to get up my driveway and had a new bridge installed along with re-contouring the drive, but saved the old bridge for backup. I digress... the Canada thistle is mostly a nuisance for the moment. Hundreds in what would be the "yard" area and I mow them for now. The purple thistles are the ones I'm trying to keep from going to seed. They are dotted all over my acres, like you would see in an unkempt pasture. All those neat idealistic pictures of yellow finches sitting atop a huge purple thistle flower are pretty to look at, until you see the wickedness of the rest of the plant. I haven't mentioned my clay rock base much because I guess I don't really think about it. I've already learned how to make my own good soil with composting layers and have been doing my gardens that way for years. The concept of digging into typical ground and just plopping a plant in is a foreign concept to me. A pile of horse, goat, chicken, or alpaca manure is pure brown gold to me. Hmm... I'm not sure what that says about me.... Fancy new shoes and a designer handbag or a pile of compost?? Um, compost please!

To echo Jeri's comments, I don't think Sophie's Perpetual is a good fit for zone 6-ish. I put a free one from the Rogue Valley mystery roses into my virtual zone 6 pocket in my yard, and it sort of limped by after a very mild winter last year and totally disappeared this year. I think it's marginally hardy in zone 6, and better in zone 7.If it's in a container, you lose a virtual zone of winter protection and so you'd be a virtual zone 5 in a pot and not a good fit for Sophie's Perpetual. Pink Pet is the only China-type rose that survives well for me, but it's more of a Polyantha than a China in effect and it doesn't climb or get much beyond 3-4' for me. If you're looking for something from the RU sale that would climb well in zone 5, Awakening is rock solid hardy and has lovely pink flowers. It blooms just fine in part shade, and the only concern might be that it gets too big for even a half whiskey barrel. Mine was pretty thorny too. Among hybrid musks, only Lavender Lassie would be reasonably hardy in zone 5 and it would be a good fit for part shade. the mini climber Jeanne LaJoie survives fine in a typical zone 5 winter and is a much better fit for a pot. I think she'd do OK in part sun, though any rose blooms less in part sun. Antique 89 and Harlekin are both nicely hardy but they do die to the ground in my zone 5 and they only bloom sporadically in the year for me. Mine aren't particularly happy in part sun. Viking Queen survives fine in zone 5 but seems to die to the ground each year so you wouldn't necessarily get a ton of bloom. Veilchenblau would be an absolute trooper and climb or bush out huge in no time, and it's in dry shade under my oak tree. It's a once bloomer but gorgeous lush blooms for several weeks once established - here's mine in more or less full bloom with an admiring bunny that my daughter pointed out: Purple Splash and Stormy Weather both seem to survive OK in zone 5 and regrow from the ground reasonably well, so they'd be worth a try if you want the purple striped climbers. I haven't overwintered Quicksilver yet but the odds are good that it will be a good one for winter survival, being a Kordes. Paulspride is the only other rose listed as a climber on the RU sale that survives the winters well for me. Ghislaine Feligonde comes back reasonably well but it has tiny while flat blooms that aren't the attractive shapes others have, and I'm wondering if mine is the correct ID. Among the Austins, most of them are hardy but the ones that tend to be climbers on the RU sale list are the ones that survive the least for me - I can't keep Golden Celebration overwintered, nor Strawberry Hill or James Galway. Lady of Shalott is rock solid hardy as is Scepter'd Isle, Carding Mill and Heritage, but they get at most 5-6' tall by the end of spring since Austins rarely have surviving cane for me. Crown Princess Margareta is a climber and hardy, but I never get blooms from mine without surviving cane and it never has any. Rebecca in zone 5 has tons though and lovely blooms from hers. For other OGRs, Baronne Prevost and Mme. Isaac Periere are both fully hardy here, though BP would be better for a pot. She does Ok in part sun for me but would bloom more in sun. MIP prefers sun and doesn't bloom on new wood for me, so I don't get much bloom most years. Among shrubs, Alchymist is very hardy but a once bloomer. Autumn Sunset would survive fine in a pot and climbs well, but blooms very little in part shade for me. Belinda's Dream would survive fine and seems OK but not happy in part sun. Dames des Chenonceau is totally hardy and in my top 20-30 of roses I grow, and can be spectacular in part sun. As you move into part shade though, I'm not sure how well she'd do. Morden Sunrise is totally hardy and would be very pretty in this context, and White Meidiland would be a low-growing spreader in white and also very hardy. Among the RU sale roses, those are the ones I'd recommend for what you're asking. I'm all in favor of taking advantage of the RU sale!! Cynthia

Straw, that's what I'm doing with thorny climbers ... growing them up my downspouts to deter thieves breaking into my house AND stealing my downspouts. I'm growing them right up the downspouts! They're copper and it's ridiculous these days what people looking for a quick buck will steal. I've planted Florentina and will be adding Phyllis Bide when she's grown up a bit. I'm still debating on this sale as I have to get a couple that are expensive shipped and still have my gift certificate from HCRs. I'll be going there next week to pick them out so maybe I need to give this a miss until next year. I did really want Purezza and a couple of others so I reserve the right to change my mind. : ))

@berrypiez6b not at all, my entire backyard is a pot ghetto. I need to stop buying roses, but so far haven't. Amour de molene, does have stunning blooms but just a stingy bloomer and plant is not very vigorous. My favorites are Garden delight, Boscobel, celestial night, Julia child, heaven on earth(heavy nodding blooms but so beaitiful), Rio samba, munstead wood, pope John Paul, grand dame, mother of pearl, sweet mademoiselle..are all very effortless and easy, and lots of blooms. Oh how could I forget Zaide and Beverly(RRD got them too) but they were always in bloom with no care. Definitely check out Zaide-absolutely stunning..perfect for a cottage type garden..4-5 inch blooms, had let mine grow out to a wide shrub( 7 wide x 5ft) ..had 100's of blooms everytime..we get high temps with heavy humidity. https://www.helpmefind.com/rose/l.php?l=21.318929

Yeah! My birthday is in 2weeks. I got DH to give Nor'East roses for our Anniversary with their farewell sale. Now I will "suggest" he take advantage of this sale. lol

Hi Phyl! I have a call into RU myself and am checking on 3 roses. EuroDesert also has a sale going on; buy 3 get 1 free, so I'm getting some from Cliff too.

Anyway, I have Henri. Love, love this guy. He's in his 2nd year and just keeps getting better. You will adore the red color; it's the red with blue gene...and the stripes are great! It's very healthy but I do spray for BS. Last year for protection I just threw some dried Miscanthus grass over the top of him and Camille Pisarro because they were first-year infants in the garden and they sprang right up in the spring and started blooming without missing a beat. Great choice!

Hope you can find something you want there....when I called I gave him a list of about 10-11 I was at least interested in and he said he'd call me back to tell me which ones he had, which he did. I was surprised he had all but one (Rosanna)!

Terry-thanks for the info on Henri. I love stripes,but have only had a few....Oranges & Lemons (which I thought I would like, but turns out too garish for my tastes) & had George Burns, but, I don't know, just blew so quick, so I gave to someone.
I love to make bouquets, so am tired of some that don't work well in that regard.

I am not sure if the roses will have enough time to establish themselves before winter. It will be almost August when they arrive. The only roses I would consider buying this late in the season are 2 gallon own root OGRs. I bought 4 roses last summer at the RU summer sale and half of them died over the winter.

I guess I'm still going to chance it...Bill said they'd ship out on the 6th...so far all the own-roots I've grown (most from them) have been planted in June and done fine.
I'm wondering if I should plant them any deeper (like you would a grafted rose)...would this make any difference?

Lily (who has about 40 years of experience on me) always said the drop dead date for own-root roses was the 4th of July. If you can't get them in before that, don't bother. I've planted Explorer bands in November and gotten away with it, but those are totally different beasts.

You pays your money and takes your chances.

I double-checked with RU and they assured me that my order had already been processed and is ready to be shipped Monday 7/6. So I'm thinking they'll be here and planted by next weekend. Their one gallon own roots have always arrived huge and even blooming....so, we'll see how much difference 6 weeks or so will make in their ability to overwinter fine. I'll let you all know next year! :0)

I am very happy with my Laguna, it's a very vigorous and fast growing climber. The flowers are very fragrant. But the best thing for me about Laguna is that it's completely disease-resistant without any fungicide spray (I switched to no-spray gardening three years ago). It is Laguna's third season in my garden and it already covered a half of our pergola.

Alla, that is incredible!

So, anyone please chime in here, what should we plan to train this rose on? It will be our first CLIMBER climber, if you catch my drift. We have Red Eden, Don Juan and Polka, none so far has gotten all that tall yet.

I was thinking some kind of pillar, but it looks way too FAT to wrap around a pillar, right? How wide and tall is it so far?
I can't believe that is just one rose bush!

Trellis/pillar/pergola.....don't know what to plan to put it against!

I have no idea how big Laguna grows, in my zone or yours, I just assume in your colder zone it'll be somewhat smaller.
As to training Laguna, it is so easy to train it because the canes are very flexible and thin. My Laguna has not thrown any thick, stiff, long canes high into the sky, like other climbers did that I used to grow. I think you will have excellent success with training this particular climber onto a pillar using Paul Zimmerman's technique shown in his video on You Tube. Good luck!

That 'Laguna' is spectacular, alla_pa, thank you for posting the picture.

Mine have grown a lot but not bloomed much (2nd season). I agree the canes are quite flexible. They are quite thorny, too.

I already have one Francois Rabelais that I bought from RU two years ago but I love this rose so much that I wanted another one. This sale is the perfect excuse to do just that.

Then the others are striped roses and I have been wanting and looking to add some striped roses so I am a very happy camper.

Yes, I am the person that also has a GREETINGS just like you do. I am not sure what my taste in roses is except that it is very varied with all sorts of flower forms here and I love them all.

That's great news, Rita! Yes, I have varied tastes too, but there are a few kinds of things I definitely DON'T like in a rose:

Minis who open and show dirty-loking stamens
Quilled blooms
Blooms that open too quickly

I just made room for my RU order by giving away 5 rose bushes & a giant iris too. And I made a wonderful new gardening friend in the process!

I made some room for all the roses I bought these past few weeks by moving some BIG shrub roses from the front yard to the back, therfore freeing up room. Planning some more have round planters, already have the blocks just need the work done, planning to put some roses in a garden bed newly made this spring just filled with annuals now (going to put them at the end) and last but not least is the hard part. I am moving my roses and re-arranging my entire rose bed that runs along the side of my house. The HTs in the one section are moving and I am going to make it shrub and floribundas.

Sounds like a lot of work! Lately, I am finding I love shrub roses and floribundas the most...I have some hybrid teas/grandifloras whose blooms I love WHEN they decide to bloom, but the others seem to bloom more or less continuously.

Lesley- Humm, I didn't notice STARS N STRIPES FOREVER until you brought it up. I bought 3 striped roses and maybe I should add this one too. Of course, I never heard of it before so am no help to you, sorry.

I often like to try a rose I have not heard about. Sometimes I find success and sometimes I don`t!! I`ll let you know how this rose does for me. I`m in KY. so not the same zone but some info is better than none. Rita, your gardens are an inspiration to me. Your roses are wonderful and the addition of your daylily collection and lilies are spectacular. Keep posting!!! Lesley
