Quasi Lasagna Garden ---- Help me keep it going

I am a third grade teacher. We went outside today and attempted to create a lasagna garden in an area where we have tried to plant before with minimal success due to sandy conditions. Here is what I did:

1) first layer = cardboard

2) second layer = newspaper

3) then I threw some peat moss that I had, even though I figured it would do nothing....I just wanted to get rid of it.

4) third layer = leaves

5) fourth layer = grass clippings

My layers are really, really thin. Getting the kids to apply the layers that we did was hard enough. The whole thing is probably only 4 inches above the regular ground - and I figure it will settle to about an inch the next time it rains.

Will this be enough to amend the soil a bit? Should I do something else?
