What is a sport? Is it a mutation that breeds true?

How/why does it occur?

Yes, a sport is a mutation, but it doesn't necessarily breed true. Sports occur because AVs have somewhat unstable genes. You must remember, all AV species are single purple pansies; *everything* came from that. So sometimes the DNA doesn't split quite the way it should, or whatever, and you get a sport. Sometimes it's actually a reversion to a parent or ancestor, sometimes it's something new. If it breeds true over three generations, you have a new variety.

So if someone is advertising "X" a sport of "y", then it has bred true for three generations and they have given it a name all it's own?

Saija, your greenies are anything but boring, each one different from the other I also had a Fire and Ice, and it also died on me in year 2 or three. Still debating with myself whether or not to replace...then Mbug posts a picture of his beauty and gets me thinking about it all over again, lol. Interesting little leaf on CF! It's the second year for my Revolution (2011) to produce a green sport so I had better remove it before it unfurls any further to make the job easier. I think it is an attractive, striking green colour. Babka, what is the age of your OBL? I have one (2015) which is why I'm curious... it seems there is no rhyme or reason in terms of when hostas sport but I'm curious just the same and will keep an eye out. Are those 4 leaves one eye? That colour combination of the hostas in that photo is very pretty. I think I will separate Electrocution very soon. It is slightly heaved out of the ground so replanting it now seems also an ideal time to separate the sport. There are advantages to my being a pip-counter - I tend to catch the nuances of something different early on. It's like finding presents in the garden, lol.

Thank you, all! I was kidding about naming and registering it, but…. @alabamaav, I had already searched through the known sports list for all of Lyndon Lyon’s sports and none is described that matches mine. @Rosie1949, I don’t know about the requirements to prove stability in AVs, and particularly chimeras, but — if I decide to — I’d certainly do everything required to patent/register it. Actually, in that case, I think it would make the most sense for me to contact LL with photos first. eta: @Rosie1949, 3 generations is correct! I need to take flower cuttings again if i want to do it. :)

What sport ? That is how you figure out the size for instance a basketball court needs to be a specific size so 91x49x 22' I doubt the OP intends on hosting NBA / NFL / NHL games in this "indoor sport court". Therefore, a basketball court does NOT need to be 91x49x22. I'm sure the OP is simply wanting a reasonable space for kids to be active during inclement weather. Where they can shoot some hoops, throw a ball, hit a wiffle ball, play kickball, ect.

@sultry_jasmine_nights (Florida-9a-ish) It has always seemed to me that every garden needs a pond, even if it's just a little pond (300 gal.) like this one. It's a habitat feature for birds and other animals, for one, which is pleasing and sometimes annoying. I used to just have mosquito fish in it for mosquito abatement, then my mother's goldfish needed to find a new home. They wiped out the mosquito fish and, being so large and showy, attract herons, egrets, and raccoons, hence the net covering most of the pond. The reason the blue glass float is on TOP of the net (something I noticed only after taking the photo) is that the raccoon often fishes it out of the pond, while using the net as a platform -- a distraction, I guess, to make up for not being able to get at the fish. @Karen Service The steep slope resulted from the developer slicing off the toe of a hill to make this lot circa 50 years ago, which means it was mostly subsoil -- definitely a challenge. What has worked best has been native CA chaparral species, with a few chaparral species from other Mediterranean climates (e.g., Cistus ladanifer, rosemary, greveillea) and, interestingly, a Fortuniana rose. My 'Orange Mothersday', which came from Vintage, is virtually thornless, too -- only a single thorn, maybe, at the base of wood so old it's probably due for removal. Soil and climate can affect bloom color. For example, many years (this very cool one being the exception), so-called purple rose blooms are instead screaming pink here and so-called yellow blooms are either white or pink, due to the heat mostly.

Don't brag; we can't find Stargate *or* Battlestar Galactica anywhere around here. Target said they only get the 'popular' series. The words 'season *8*' seem to have escaped them. Grr! Argh!

Honey, *you* are the one who can gloat. I meant that season 8 has come to *broadcast* in Canada!!!! Not DVD.

As for the 'sport' question, anybody?

My book (African Violets: the Complete Guide by Hill & Goodship) says that sports should always be labelled as such, and should not be given a new name even if it proves stable. Label as "Sport of..." They don't say how many veg. generations it has to be for stability.

So if I buy a plant labelled "X" a sport of "y", then I really have no idea if the leaves will breed true or not. Right?

Not that I necessarily care if they breed true, but I've come to rely on my little leaf prop. setup to save me if I do something *really* stupid and lose one of my new little guys.

Brambles, would you recommend that book? Is it huge? Is there more of a beginner version?

This book is tiny, I'd call it a beginner version. There are 124 pages. You can find most of the information in this book online (even just at Rachel's), but I like to have a book sometimes too.
