Please help me decide if I should take down this tree...

Hello All,

This Eastern Pine has only top growth so I don't know if I should take it down or just trim the lower branches.

How long do they normally last?

You could start with removing the lower branches and if that isn't good enough go on and take down the whole tree

I've seen worse...looks like you have a large property? If there's no reason to need more sun in that area, you chould just leave it and trim out the lower dead branches. They last pretty long where they are happy, i.e., in their native range. Are you north of Mason-Dixon or south of it; if south of it are you above 1000'?

I think anyone who is able to survive working in a UPS shipping hub during the holiday season is entitled to leave their tree up however long they need to. (Frankly, I'm surprised the spectre of PTSD didn't prevent you from putting up a tree at all! But this is your first year...) My neighbors have a plan for leaving their Christmas lights up all winter. They sting mostly white lights, and then add separate strands of all red and all green. They have lit wreaths on their windows from about Thanksgiving to Epiphany... then they put lit hearts on their windows, and only use the red and white lights for another month or so... then they put lit shamrocks in the windows and stick with green and white for about a month. Theoretically, this is lots of work, but they are only changing out the indoor componants during the cold months... For your sake, I hope the tree in question is artificial!

Not really. I'm thinking I need something with dappled shade, that I'll be able to stand under someday. My husband and my dogs laugh at me because I spend a considerable amount of time standing in the backyard staring at things - sometimes space. I've stared long enough, though, to think I should plant some trees as close to the west wall as I can, so as to allow the most light on the plants in the earlier part of the day. Then, I read in Mary Irish's Month-by-Month book, you can grow everything here in the shade. I also read an article on azcentral.com about the gardens at the Pointe resort, down by Guadalupe. Apparently, the chef started a cook's garden outside the back door of the kitchen. He got so obsessed with it, he now has a garden all through a canyon behind the restaurant and it's completely shaded by mesquite trees. According to the article, things are growing quite prolifically there and the menu revolves around the garden. So, I'm wondering if shade is just good. Do I even need to be so technical about it? I don't know what I should be considering. I do know it's hotter than heck in my backyard and maybe the shade is for me, more than anything else... ;-)

If you should take cuttings from them or not would all depend on what is wrong with them, why they "don't seem to be doing that well"? If it is a disease problem then cuttings are a waste of time. If it is a nutrient problem then the cuttings will have the same problems unless you ID and fix it. Is it lack of sun, lack of water, what are the symptoms? Otherwise I agree with the advice above - trench in the entire plant leaving just the growing tip exposed and hope for the best recovery and production. Dave

Karinl, thank you! Sometimes you see a piece and you just KNOW it's the one. That's what happened here. With the cabinet, and with DH! Lindac, how old do you think it is? It would be fun to know. I'm feeling really good about this purchase. I'm anxious to git 'er done! The floor. I come up with crazy ideas and DH always says "we can do that". I was apprehensive about putting a rug in the room because the doors are our only access to the back yard. Four grandsons and muddy feet...you get the picture. I have always loved inlaid floors, so we thought a wood rug was the way to go. The design came out of the scary place I call my brain. Drew it up in Auto Cad with a detailed measured plan. The natural oak is the flooring we installed in the rest of the downstairs rooms. Off we went to Lumber Liquidators with a piece of it. We first had to find something that the tongues and grooves fit together correctly. We settled on the teak because it fit, we liked the color, and there were only 3 boxes left so we got it for a song! It was important to me that the contrasting wood be real as opposed to stained in the event we ever have to refinish the floor. Don't want to lose the contrast! DH cut every little piece to fit. He then routed grooves into the cut ends and inserted splines where tongues were needed. It all went together like a giant puzzle. Not bad for prefinished hardwood flooring! Sorry for the novel. in nature.. its a telephone pole ...

that is its natural form.. in the available sun ...

there is NOTHING to fix ...

you can change the look by trimming it up ...

but again ... it wont change its natural form nor shape ... nor growth habits ...

with two leaders.. and the power lines there.. get rid of it.. carefully .... especially if you are personally going to have to pay to reset that power source ... should the tree take it out ...

I can't tell how tall it is, but they can get 100 + feet tall. If it isn't near that tall yet, I would guess it could still get a good thick upper crown. If it is super tall already, maybe the sun available isn't plentiful enough for better crown thickening, well.... basically what Ken said.

If that is white pine, they get very big (>100') and live a long time (200-400 years). The split trunk looks a little odd but not unhealthy. Lower branches dying is normal unless tree is in full sun.

By itself, I might consider removing if I had the resources - due to power lines, but chances of falling on lines doesn't seem excessively high. Also, if you cut it down, with those other trees just fill in the space and you are left with the same problem down the road? There are lots of trees that are far weaker than white pine!

Based on the assumption the lane is 8 to 10 feet wide the tree looks like it is about 20 to 30 feet from the power lines. Base on the type of tree, I do not see any need to remove it.

As for the low branches, unless you are willing to hire someone with climbers or a cherry picker. You can remove the lower dead branches with a hammer and a long rope. Tie the hammer to the end of the rope, and arrange the rope so it can feed freely. The throw the hammer over the dead branch, feed the rope until the hammer reaches the ground that pull the branch down by pulling both ends of the rope.

MAKE SURE YOU STAY CLEAR AND THERE IS NO ONE ELSE IN THE AREA.

If you can not pull the limb down it tells you something about the general state of the tree.

I have used this method for years to keep my trees clean of dead wood.

Please help me decide if I should take down this tree...
