tree trunks buried in clay five feet - anything I can do to save?

I just moved in to a new construction home. The rear lot backs up to woods (mainly mature maples and oaks). The home is a walk-out basement, and the yard slopes down away from the house into the woods. The home was actually built three years ago, and at that time the lot behind the house was graded up with heavy clay soil that was dug out to create the foundation. The result is that about ten trees bordering the wooded part of the lot were essentially buried between three and five feet deep. Now the original root structure is way below ground.

Several are already goners, and I have had them removed. Is there anything I can do to save the remaining trees, or has it been too long? Digging them out on both sides is not really an option, but I can try steepening the slope at the tree line by removing soil from one side of the tree trunk. Help!
