Early American Rose Society Annuals-FREE

I've talked before about the Google program of digitizing libraries and getting some really important rose books on line.

Late last week I found many of the earliest ARS annuals on line, for free, as full text downloads.

So far, 1916 through 1922 appear to be available (although I haven't captured 1919 yet)(The scans were of the Harvard collection.)

With my slow land line, I can't just open and read, but I go to a faster computer, download onto a CD and then bring the disk home to read at leasure.

What is really nice is to open the google site, on the book special search, go to the annual number I've got on, and search for specific roses, using the google search function on the book pages.

The link below will take you to a page where you can choose either to read or to download that particular annual.

Other annuals are available under "Other Editions" and also the "(more)" under Other editions.

You pretty much can't go wrong with any of them, Susan, but if you are interested in reading contemporary descriptions of older rose types, these should provide you with some real meat. We frequently read of an HP or other more modern, OGR and it sounds too wonderful to be lost. Read what those who handled them when they were current, before they had the opportunity to be confused with anything else and before they were deemed synonymous, and you can discover quite a bit. These have some very interesting lists, in the order shown from Henry's original link. You'll quickly develop the feel that many of them were so very similar because they were often self seedlings, and too often, inferior to the seed parent. You may generate something rather interesting and worthwhile from the first "selfing", but how many generations of that can be tolerated before the results are too inbred? The "How to Grow Roses" by Robert Pyle are fun looks at rose growing in the first decade of the last century. Captain Thomas has a book there, too and he is always instructive and interesting. I skimmed some of the 1921 Annual, and I think there is a theme there that modern growers could learn from. They wanted their roses growing in heavy loam or clay amended with manure. It was considered a misfortune if you don't have clay in your soil-- you would have to import it from far away! Today many gardeners are so far separated from farming and gardening traditions, they think clay is terrible, they have it hauled off and replaced with muck or landscaper's "planting mix." Of course clay is terrible if you don't understand how to manage it without compacting it, and most people don't. Every article or chapter about soil preparation ought to start out with a paragraph about that in bold type.

Another point-- Capt. Thomas writes that Cl. Cecile Brunner blooms all the time in California.

I have wondered how far back goes the tradition of wretched excess in rose gardening. I guess to people trying to force HPs to repeat, and later trying to force the feeble early HTs to grow. One reporter in the 1921 annual says he had a problem with thick hardpan under the topsoil, so he inserted small dynamite charges in drills to the bottom of the hardpan, and voila! perfect drainage. Many of them have dug the whole garden area to 2' or 2-1/2' (cheap hired labor, no doubt) and installed French drains.

Several of them keep annual records of the bloom production of each plant. Often in the East it's only 10-20 per year. You wonder why they were growing HPs instead of Bourbons and why people were so crazy about those troublesome HTs.

The attraction of early HT's was probably obvious at the time: color and hardiness. The rose world was mad for oranges and yellows after years of pinks, roses, and white. Teas offered pale sunset colors that weren't hardy. HT's offered brighter sunsets and the promise (rarely fully realized) of hardiness.

As for dynamite in the rose garden, oh, the fun until the neighbors call the sheriff.

Yellows-- Souv. de Claudius Pernet won the top award at the Bagatelles trial that year. That's a rose I would enjoy seeing sometime.

A couple of people in the annual mention that Mme. Butterfly is relatively vigorous and free-blooming. It's a rose that a modern breeder would probably discard for lack of vigor, despite the perfect flower and fragrance.

Thanks for the posting, Ann. I'd run across Google Books many times before while doing research for translations, but never thought to use it for rosey things. Have enjoyed browsing these Annuals.

BTW, for me, the download link for the 1917 Annual will only download the Usage Guidelines page. I emailed the Feedback link -- they actually replied, and quickly! It was a "pass the info along to tech support" message, but it wasn't an automated reply -- impressive!

In the 1922 annual there is an article about the rose industry in Springfield, Ohio, producing millions of own-root plants in greenhouses. I never heard of that before.
