Climbing Duchesse de Brabant

I attended a lecture by Gregg Lowery of Vintage Gardens the other night, about roses in Australia. He said (with a picture) that he had found a Cl Duchesse de Brabant there. Sure enough, HMF says it is commercially available, but only in Australia. Of course, our stupid law prevents any roses from getting here from Australia. I was wondering if anyone has heard of this rose, or knows of anywhere (Europe, perhaps!) where it might be available. It is a sport, of course, so theoretically it could show up anywhere at anytime on a bush form of that rose -

According to HMF, this rose appeared circa 1900. It seems very odd that a rose that was introduced around 110 years ago hasn't yet made it out of Australia -- if not to the U.S., then to Europe or elsewhere. I wonder if there's more to the story . . .

Jackie, a similar situation is Maman Cochet which sported a climber in Australia in 1909 and then within a year or so sported in the US. I believe the same happened with White Maman Cochet. If you have the "Tea Roses for Warm Climates" book from Australia, it's discussed a lot there for several roses. I believe Australia has a Red Maman Cochet, Cl, but we don't. In the book they mention Climbing DdB, but in Australia it's called Comtesse de LaBarthe (she's the rose on the cover of the book) & Countess Bertha. The interesting thing is that a DdB climber hasn't been sported in the US in all these years as the Maman Cochets did.

Yes, somebody has to change that law against importing roses from Australia. It turned out that the disease (rose wilt, I think) that they were trying to keep out of the US wasn't even a real disease!

Jackie, I love the photos of your garden that I've seen. Can't wait till you figure out your new camera. I especially love your LeVesuve. Breathtaking! I have a young one that I love AND the climber (little baby in a pot.) I believe LeVesuve is mentioned in the Aussie book.

aggierose, it's my favorite garden center in all of North Texas. Here are directions: They are between Forest Lane and Royal Lane and between Hillcrest and Central Expressway at 7700 Northaven Rd. Dallas, Texas 75230. It's in the middle of a nice residential area on Northaven Road. Muscovyduckling, I did get a Souvenir de la Malmaison climber, and have great hope it'll be a beautiful rose. I got it bare root at the same time I got my bare root Austins, but it hasn't started blooming yet. If it does well, it should be the perfect color for the fountain trellis. Rosefolly, you're absolutely right. I'm judging a rose -- Crepuscule -- that I've never seen except in pictures. I'm excited to have it, and hope I fall head over heels once I see it blooming. Ingrid, you were the one who inspired me to get Duchesse de Brabant, and I'm so grateful. Will you be getting your new one now or in autumn? Mine is doing well so far, and I hope yours does too. Molineux, this little Duchesse has been blooming continuously since I received it, and the blooms are elegant deep cups -- just lovely. All the roses in this new garden are being trialed, and those that do best will get a permanent spot, with multiples of each of the few selected. Duchesse is certainly in the running, and your description of the shrub is a big help. Mendocino rose, I feel so fortunate to be engulfed in such incredible beauty. I would never even have known about many of these roses, except for the great help I got on this forum. Do you think Heritage will do well in a hot climate? I don't need the trellis to be smothered in roses. A simple tracery with a few roses would be quite lovely. Some people say heritage blows quickly; do you find that to be the case? People also say that about Claire Austin, but mine almost always has blooms, and they last long enough to keep me happy. Michaelg, I wish I was still in the rust belt, enjoying the ocean breezes and dozing off to the hypnotic repetitive crashing waves. As others have said -- Nodding blooms don't bother me in the least, and they CAN be an asset. Years ago -- my DH said he didn't LIKE roses ... that they were "ugly plants with bare bottoms" and "all look like they went to military school." Well, we don't grow roses like THAT. :-) We grow roses that, for the most part, arch, or climb, and/or nod . . . and we both like them very much. But it is a fortunate thing that roses take so many different forms. There's more or less "something for everyone." Sort of like dogs . . . From Irish Wolfhound to Chihuahua ... there's something there for everyone. :-) Me -- I enjoy China andTea Roses, and Long-Haired Dalmatians. YMMV. :-)

Duchesse de Brabant is a Tea rose (1857) and should repeat. Grahem Stuart Thomas says Tea roses should be allowed to grow up slowly with light pruning. I am very interested in John Scaraman's pruning instructions which he says is the French method followed at Roserie de l'Hay-les-Roses and Bagatelle: just before the new buds break, prune away any growths that do not have blooms on them, then after the main flush is over,very late summer, do your summer prune by taking out the 'fishing rods' that grow up. While he uses this method for ramblers etc on arches, it also works for me with Mme Gregoire Stachelin. It is worth trying. But don't be too brutal!

Thanks to you both. I agree that it is very odd that DdB hasn't sported a climber again, considering the number that must be growing in gardens all over. Maybe it has, but no one noticed or cared ......we just have to pay more attention!

I have 2 plants of DdB - one is very old (at least 70, and possibly 80 yrs) - it is intermingled in with the large hedge of Le Vesuve - it was years before I figured out it was a different rose (I'm slow). Finally I realized that the very cupped, shell pink roses were different than the pink Le Vesuve blossoms. So, I rooted it last year, and now have a baby DdB clone growing in the garden. I will definitely keep an eye on it in case it decides to sport in the future! I love climbers, and would certainly love to have a Cl DdB.

The fact that DdB has a climbing sport was just brought to my forgetful brain, and I can picture it in the same semi-shady spot where the bush form is now growing weakly, but the climber would be growing up and out into the sun. I do not find it on the Vintage website. Does anyone know if Gregg Lowery every imported her? I think I'd be willing to pay the shipping and ag fees on this one. The photos from Australia on HMF are wonderful.
