Do these Planters work for Trees or Big plants?
Comments (27)Nik, go read al's advice to you in the container forum. He uses his mix, of course, but he states that he has hypertufa pots, and he does NOT put drainage holes because they are so porous, they self drain. Not sure how accurate that is, but Al's mix is much different than the dirt the majority of folks use, and if you do have drainage holes, maybe you might need a heavier soil? I'd still put holes, but not big ones! The thing that attracted me to hypertufa in the first place was how lightweight it is, and the fact that it allows air to get to the roots. I BELIEVE in air pruning roots so that they don't circle and get root bound, like in a regular plastic pot. I'm not sure if hypertufa pots prevent roots from going root-bound, so I'd be tempted to stick a thousand bamboo skewers in the sides and bottom of mine for light and air holes. When a root meets light and air, it stops, prunes it's self, and forms many root branches. It then can take advantage of all the nutrients in the soil, and any branches that meet your air/light holes, will do the same and branch more. I'm not sure on a big 3" thick pot if the thing would be porous enough without dozens of tiny holes. If you have not heard of that concept, google "air pruning," or "root pruning," and you will understand. A farmer's view (orchard growers) of a container, is different than a gardener's view for sure! Good luck with this project! I'm watching every step! Also, feet on the bottom will lift the container and the roots will prune themselves and not stick out of the drain holes. Comments (8)Thanks for starting this thread. I too had wondered about this. I already have a Valencia Dwarf orange tree in a pot and I'm looking for a mandarin to be started in another, and just like you I'm a Cuties fan! Checking out Monterey Bay Nursery, it seems like those guys only deal in wholesale and perhaps with professionals. (not sure if I misinterpreted but this seemed to be the case). I've purchased dwarf citruses in the past from Four Winds Growers (they retail at Summerwinds, OSH and Lowe's etc). My experience with their trees has been great. I learnt about them on GW and lots of folks have had very good experience with their trees. If you choose to purchase from a particular place, please do share the information and pictures (of your container) too! Good luck!!...See MoreDo guava trees do well in the SF Bay Area?
Comments (12)I live in Danville, I have about 10 different types of trees. Most of my true tropical types (I got the seeds from India.) die over the winter but grow back. Nothing works for these, No matter how much I cover them, it seems just when I think, its warm and take the cover off, boom, the freeze comes and they are fried crisp over night. Some of my varieties (those purchased here locally) made it even through the freeze this year (2013). The one I particularly like is a type called lemon guava. These are small yellow fruits, that are very tasty. These made it just fine, fruiting all through the winter. Am thinking about building a small three sided greehouse for my trees....See MoreHow do I mix evergreens or perennials in long narrow planter box
Comments (3)You can always 'cheat'. If you want to have seasonal patches of colour in your box use potted plants and snug them into the soil in the pot. Water and feed as usual. Low maintenance and trails: hmm. Variegated ivies are possible. Verbena. Sempervivums but you need patience for them while they increase. Echeveria, if you have a sheltered area. Temporary trailers - tuberous begonias - or ordinary semp begonias for upright colour in leaf and flowers. Semi shade suits them best. Shady? Impatiens is quite tolerant so long as you don't treat them like camels! (They appreciate watering...) So are the Tradescantias and Setcraesea but they are all frost tender. You could add in Davallia fern, too, which looks pretty but is tender....See Moremenashe79
