Barbara's Inevitable Quote

Earlier this year when I first started growing I took a break from watching basketball and posted here. As you all know in the beginning you're so excited about your violets hoping the leaves you have put down don't all turn to mush. You know the routine, but you're so impatient! Barbara posted back this inevitable quote "Remember, March Madness turns into April Foolishness, so be prepared!" Oh, so true Barbara!

It's great you all are here and just wanted to say thanks for all your help and knowledge, and a special Thank You to Marigene:)

If my violets could talk they would tell you I've evolved from Camp Git Mo (torturous pounding while potting) to Attica prison (overcrowding). Think Mr. Cook gets back tomorrow - desperately need to order pots!

The three in the back I tried vermiculite only + water. Seem to have worked well. May use that from now on. Save soil. Mac's White Water in back corner has peduncle w/ pedicels (flower stem) Practice for Chimeras LOL.

WOW! I am impressed; they look great. I hope that I am doing as well 7 or 8 months into this as you are. I started in July, so it's wonderful to see how well everything is doing in such a short time.

I am so impressed! I started in August...and my 'ears' are progressing nicely on what I have planted...and some nice person sent me some 'babies' and I bought some (unfortunately, not small, too..
but had to put them all under lights as my light source is now covered pretty much with leaves from the trees outside my window....I am in an apt. house so I can't tell 'them' cut the leaves on the trees..........so I devoted my whole second bedroom to violets....(and my puter)...

WHAT is the secret of your wonderful success...??? I am so impressed.....I am following all the tips and anything I can get my hands or eyes on!

Anything u can tell me will help.....and any extra miniatures...leaves included...will help too...will be glad to pay postage...thank you....!!

I was taking 2 calcium tablets in the a.m. and 2 in the p.m.. It occurred to me that maybe I should be taking them 3 times a day, at each meal, in smaller doses. What I've been reading about calcium absorption is confusing and contradictory. Some of the foods that are high in calcium, such as kale and collards, are also high in oxalic acid, which interferes with the absorption of calcium. I eat a ton of spinach, which I love, and it's high in oxalic acid. I wonder if that might have contributed to my bone loss. I do exercise a lot. I walk/jog 2 or 3 days a week, and weight train, usually mixed with cardio 3 days a week, for around 45 minutes to an hour. I take 1 to 2 days off, but frequently do yard work on my days off of formal exercise. I've been doing that for a few years now. However, from what I've been reading, I should have been doing that for much longer. This bone loss thing has probably been going on for quite some time. I'm certainly going to get onto my daughter and my daughter in law to start now on preventing this bone loss. In the meantime, I've gotten a stack of books from the library to read. I was wondering if that vitamin store, GNC, might have a good calcium supplement. Has anyone shopped there? I never have - the place always looks so intimidating through the window, all those bottles of stuff. lol. Sally

I checked with the Barbara Barry store in Canada who checked with Baker and was told "as long as there is demand for the Barbara Barry line, it will continue to be manufactured". I hope this is true because, personally I think the Barbara Barry line by Baker is higher quality and more elegant than the Barbara Barry line by Henredon. Although when you search for Barbara Barry the only thing that comes up is the Barbara Barry & Co website which is her Henredon line. So I hope Baker can maintain the line. Also - we own both lines, Henredon Barbara Barry for our bedroom and Baker Barbara Barry for our dining room, and I truely believe the Baker stuff is far superior.

glass tile issues; is this problem inevitable?

Look at the backing on the tile from the factory. If it doesn't got to the complete edge of the tile you will have the black lines. Find 2 tiles out of your material, one that you can see the factory applied backing goes COMPLETELY to the edge and one that the backing doesn't. You can clearly see the difference. Now put those 2 tiles up against any solid color substrate and you can see the difference. The tile that doesn't have the backing run all the way to the edge you will see the black line. The tile that does have it run to the edge will not be as noticeable. The unfortunate thing is you probably will not find more than 5% of your tile that has the full coverage of the backing. It is the nature of the beast . Regardless of white thinset with a white backer and 100% white grout filled, the defect is in the tile . Think of glass in a window, look down it from one edge to the other. You will always see a line just may be different color depending on glass color

Hey, Thanks for all the encouraging posts. They are greatly appreciated. I know I'm not fooling you seasoned growers - My carts don't always look that organized! They knew they were getting their pictures taken. LOL I had just neemed and lined things up alphabetically for easier locating and decided to take pictures. By no means do my violets stay in such neat rows. It's all I can do to get their wick back into any proximity from which it came! (sigh)

Bonnie, my secret (funny) guess it would be obsession. If I'm home rarely a day doesn't go by that I don't do something, not that I'm working on them, but a least looking and inspecting. Consistency. Fred said it all in a post to MeyerMike:

"The key to growing good violets is consistency. By that I mean to treat the plants the same way all the time. Water on schedule and fertilize on schedule. This plus keeping your plant area clean and checking them every time you water to get rid of any dead or dying leaves as well as keeping the plants trimmed to a symmetrical shape. Remove dead blossoms as soon as they fade and check for diseases every time you are by your plants."

There is a tool I use that has probably saved many a leaf and ears from over watering and rot: a syringe.

It shoots a fine stream of water to moisten the mix. You have greater control and is easier for me to use than watering can, turkey baster, eye drop etc. The curved end is useful for lifting hidden buds and crown leaves.

I also LOVE my syringe! I used to use it for measuring fertilizer. Now? It's always by me AVs.
