Tree Roses?? Autumn Sunset, Westerland

Hi, Anyone tried tree roses in zone 5? Did you have luck with them. What about overwintering?

Also, is it typical for Autumn Sunset and Westerland not to bloom after their first big display in June? Are most roses bloomless in July and August? Any suggsetions on some that will give me more flowers during the summer doldrums?

I like tree roses, but I shy away from them because of the winter protection issues. They take special procedures for wintering outside unless you have them in a large container that can be kept in a cold greenhouse about 35-40F for the winter.

Autumn Sunset and Westerland should repeat. I used to have Westerland, and it did bloom on and off all through the growing season. Have you dead-headed it? Have you fed and watered it adequately? Have you kept it healthy? All these issues influence the repeat flowering characteristics. Ambient temperature does influence a rose's growth, but Westerland is not as sensitive as are some other varieties. It should be reasonably okay.

The six own-root Autumn Sunsets I planted in Madison, Mississippi are just barely hanging on. They went in just before we moved, and the young Surgeons who bought the house are sporadic with their watering. So, they're getting so-so care. Reports are that each will throw three or four wonderful Apricot blooms per YEAR. Maybe it's a case of too-good drainage. Maybe not enough fertilizer. Probably, they don't like the Mississippi heat. I'm going to put them in the category of things that CAN BE made to grow in the Deep South: as in with lots of effort. Morning sun only. Perfectly-ammended soil a must. Shaded roots a must. Plenty of water a must. Optimal fertilizer a must. If you've got the time... I may try one up here, where my Westerland is very happy. Better choices exist for the Deep South, though.

Although we are both in zone 5a our winters probably are quite a bit different in snowfall amounts and some other factors that could make a difference in the surviveability of various climbers. Westerland has been struggling for me since I planted it 5 years ago. Part of the problem is it was not getting enough water due to a sprinkler not reaching it. That's been fixed and now sprouts a few long canes each year that are stingy with blooms. It's not planted deep but comes back each year after losing all it's canes. This year, it has one cane struggling to grow. I'll keep babying it as long as it survives the winters. Autumn Sunset is not protected but comes back strong each year. It dies back but never to the ground. This year it had 2-3 foot of green on the canes. It blooms heavily begining in early June and continues all summer. I have two, one planted on either side of a small arbor. Awakening was just planted last year but survived winter well with little dieback. My two Fourth of July have a similar habit as Autumn Sunset. New Dawn survived green almost to the tips. Berlin was a real winner regarding winter dieback. City of York, growing through a chain link fence also has lots of cane survival as did Dublin Bay, Coral Dawn, Darlow's Enigma, Clair Matin, and Leverkusen. I've planted a few more climbers climbers this year, Dortman, Pele', and Royal Sunset. Dortman and Royal Sunset should do well in zone 5a but Pele' will probably require severe pruning each spring.

If Royal Sunset survives for you in zone 6b, then I'd agree that it's the prettier of those two roses. For me in zone 5, Royal Sunset has failed to overwinter 3 times, but Westerland is fine. Even more hardy is its counterpart Autumn Sunset, but it's more on the yellow side of the color range. In my summer heat, Ginger Syllabub fades to a creamy beige most of the time, but it is reliably hardy in my zone 4 pocket. Polka is another lovely apricot climber, but I find it fades pretty quickly too and the canes are very stiff. Cynthia

Here in California's mild climate, Westerland is a magnificent, vigorous, and healthy climber. I have mine tucked away on a distant fence. It gets a pruning and grooming once a year and otherwise I neglect it. It rewards this careless treatment with a wonderful spring display and light occasional repeat. I would not hesitate to recommend it to any gardener in a climate similar to mine. However, I have heard that while it will survive and bloom in a cold winter climate, it remains a smaller shrub and never becomes a climber. I am passing along hearsay, since I have never grown it in a cold-winter climate myself. As for Autumn Sunset, I planted it right next to Westerland, just as you did. I thought the color echo very clever. Great minds think alike, at least some of the time! However I found it to be a disappointment. It never attained the robustness of its next door neighbor. After several years I removed it, and have since replaced it with a plum tree called Coe's Golden Drop. Rosefolly

My Autumn Sunset blooms almost continuously all summer. Even the one year old rooted cuttings I have in pots bloom repeatedly. I just keep the spent blooms cut off. Westerland does not bloom so well for me. It gives me a couple of flowers in spring but blooms rather sparsely after that, although a one year potted rooted cutting of it does bloom better.
It should be against the law to sell tree roses in zone 5. Unless you pot and overwinter as Bustopher says, tree roses in zone 5 end up as expensive annuals.
The only exception is Polar Joy. It's all one plant, no grafts, but it suckers freely. Well rooted suckers can be grown to be more tree roses, but they need lots of care once severed from the main plant until they get rooted well.
All other tree roses have the top graft which is prone to dying during our cold winters. It sets way up in the freezingg cold wind and ice. I've tried every method to overwinter them, to no avail. If they do survive, they go into a slow death spiral.
Save your money and put it into hardy shrub varieties. They can be just as attractive and require little or no winter protection.
