I have tried using the garden listing on HMF and was not able to make it work. I have a short attention span so I just gave up. I will try again this winter when I have nothing to do.

It has to be REALLY easy to use or I am just too illiterate to figure it out.

I would love to list my garden....

I found out the hard way that you have to close the "Update Plant List" pop up window after adding each rose, otherwise the rose you added won't show up in your list.

I did this a few months ago. Look for me as 'Hartwood Roses'. The direct link to my garden listing is on my GW member page.

I uploaded my rose list as a text file instead of adding each rose individually, and followed their instructions to match each rose to ones listed on HMF (in the case of ones that have same name/different rose). It's very, very easy.

Like the others, I have more roses to add to keep the list up to date. Had to bring a bunch home from Sherando before he closed, don't ya know.

I wasn't aware we could do that (never even thought about it). I will post as Catsrose. I've been debating a name for my house/garden and the more I use that, the more it fits: I am the cat lady with all the roses or the rose lady with all the cats. So, Catsrose Cottage Gardens.

I think I need to add a name to my little rose garden once it becomes all roses and nothing else. You guys got me thinkin'!

For those of us growing excessive numbers of roses, working with large collections in public gardens or handling changing nursery availability lists...there's a smart way to add your entire list of roses all at once. You do not need to add the rose names one at a time. With lists as small as 25 or 50 roses, the automated feature is faster than manually adding roses to the Plant List one at a time. If you are concerned about how this works, I suggest you make a small list of about ten rose names and give the software a try. You'll like it!

Make a list using your computer notepad or a text editor. The list should look like this, with just the name of the rose separated by returns. You can copy right off a spreadsheet, for example, or a Word document. But don't upload a Word file! Copy off Word into a notepad, which is free of odd characters that cause software confusion.

Remember, list just the names, no extra punctution, just returns at the end of each line. Save it on your computer with a name in a location you can find in the way you save photos that you're are going to upload.

Then go to HMF website. Go to MY HMF using the menu button on the left margin. Make sure you are logged in if you log out (I never log out). On your My HelpMeFind page, click the My Garden tab. On the My Garden page, select Plant List. On your Plant List page, you'll see two buttons near the top: UPDATE PLANT LIST and UPLOAD PLANT LIST. It's the UPLOAD button you want to select.

HMF has an upload process that allows you to select the text plant list you stored on your computer, like the way you upload Photos, except the plant lists involve more steps. Each step has a HELP button. HINT: use all the automatic features because the software is smart. I've used it to upload plant lists with 1000's of roses.

If you are uploading for the first time, use "Replace existing list." If you already have an extensive plant list, you can Append (add in) the new list to your existing list of roses. If you choose to Replace, you will replace your existing list with the roses you match on your uploaded list. This is used by nurseries that have different lists of roses for sale every year.

The software will upload your list and attempt to match the names to rose names in the HMF database. Inevitably, there will be matching problems. Many name have been reused (Aurora has been used 12 times). Species names are...complicated. When there is more than one choice, all options are displayed with links to the roses. You then select your rose from the choices presented. Process as much of the list as you can find. Your list may have misspellings or new roses not in HMF that won't be matched. You may not know which of the species roses to check. Don't worry. The roses you can't match are all compiled into a list at the end. Click through the windows to the end using CONTINUE (or use cancel to stop the upload altogether). The last screen displays your list of unmatched roses. Copy the list if it is a short one and save it onto your notepad. (The unmatched roses are STILL stored in HMF.) Then continue to the end and close, and HMF will update your plant list.

If the unmatched list of roses is short, you can add those roses manually from the list you saved: just use the UPDATE PLANT LIST button. But if you have a long list of unmatched roses, HMF can reprocess the list a second time. You can contact HMF for help with this step. You do not need to upload the list a second time because the unmatched rose list is still in HMF. When you click the UPLOAD PLANT LIST button, you will see one choice is "Continue processing previous[ly] uploaded Roses plant list from 10 July 2008." This second processing automatically Appends the roses you match to your existing list. In the second screen, you will choose "Individual manual search" instead of "Automatic (recommended)." This second manual matching allows you to search the HMF database using your own insightful searching skill, such as "contains" to search the part of a name you are sure of. Again, continue through the screens to the end.

No worries if you make a mistake. You can always remove a rose from your list using the UPDATE PLANT LIST feature. And don't think this is hard just because the instructions are long. It works efficiently. HMF's administrator can help you with any problems.

La Guardia Community Garden and I cant seem to sign into it any longer to make adjustments mots of the shots are older. Somehow I uploaded a few roses that are from BBG there

My garden is listed as Red Rose Ridge. I'm very thankful for HMF. It's the only coherant data base I have.

I am listed as BloomsandBlues.

Eric, I cannot see your list. When I search for your garden, it states you have 99 plants listed. But when I click on the plant list, it says there are no plants listed. Anyone else can't see Eric's roses?

Hi Kathy. I just checked and I could see my list. Make sure that "Roses" is selected in the "Plant Type" drop-down menu in the upper-right hand corner.

That was the problem...the idiot behind the keyboard. I wonder why I didn't have to make that selection to see the other lists. You have an impressive collection of roses.

Thanks Kathy. A lot of them were planted this year and are still pretty small. I'm always jealous of the zone 7 and up people who can grow all the different teas and chinas.

labrea, did you go to MY HMF and try the FORGOT MY PASSWORD button? Just about everything on HMF can be fixed and corrected.

If that doesn't work, use the REPORT WEBSITE ERROR at the top of the page to ask for help from the site administrator. I don't know if it's possible for multiple people to have editorial access to the same garden without using the same ID and password.

Two of us - the curator, Barbara Oliva, and myself - are both able to make changes to the Sacramento Historic Rose Garden listing, so apparently the system is set up for more than one person to make corrections/input.

Have been having fun looking at everybody's garden listing. I need to post some more photos of mine.

By the way, Eric, I missed you at Wooster - the rain cleared up midmorning -

I have tried adding roses to no avail. I tried doing it one at a time and followed the procedure. It appeared that I had completed it successfully, but there is no list. I also created a notepad list. I went through the procedure and selected the correct roses at the right. There were quite a few that made no sense (ascii or something), but the program seemed to accept my selections. Still no list. I went back to upload again and there were only the ascii items listed, so I would have thought my list would be updated, but it isn't. Don't really know what else to do.

Mine is in there under Cweathersby.

There are actually 2 cweathersbys, both mine, but I can't get logged into the other one to update it anymore so I created a new one.

So the updated one is the one with the most roses.

Berndoodle--My garden is 'Maggie's Garden.' It says there are 61 plant listings, but only two are showing up. I think that the two that are there may have been added individually rather than uploaded. I tried many times both ways to get it to work. Thanks,

Well, I tried it again today and I chose 'Replace' rather than 'Append' on the upload; this time it worked. Maybe the Append does not work well or yesterday it was not working or something. I will try to add the remaining roses individually and see how it goes.

Okay, this is it. I went back and now the list I just added is no longer there. I give up. Sorry.

I have had similar issues as jbfoodie. I am very computer literate so I know I am following the process correctly. It just isn't saving any changes I make and it is really frustrating.

I can't save my garden under My Garden -> Edit Garden Listing.

As a computer professional for several decades I firmly believe that software functionality should be "intuitively obvious." That is, the user should be able to use the application without consulting a thick manual. Functionality should be obvious.

In this case, if I am doing something wrong it is definitely not obvious. It seems more likely that there is a problem with the application. Let's face it when a user hits the "save" button there should be little dispute about what that means.

Actually the same thing happened to me, then I realized that first you have to Add New Garden and save it. Once that is done apparently you have to wait 24 hours to have it approved.

I'm waiting.

Look for the "Add New Listing" option on the appropriate listing tab (Nurseries, Gardens, etc.) and click the radio button next to it. You will be presented with a form to enter your listing name. You will also need to supply a guest id, password and email address. Access to your listing is controlled by your guest id and password. Your email address is needed for us to send you an email confirmation when your listing is reviewed and approved. Your email address is not shared with anyone.

The review and approval process normally takes less than 24 hours. Your email confirmation will include a link to your new listing and you can begin updating it immediately.

I contacted the website management/administrator under 'Report Website Error.' They fixed the problem and now I can add and delete roses. If you are still having problems, I suggest you report them to the administrator as she/he was very helpful. I had no idea you had to wait 24 hours for approval, so perhaps this was the original problem. In any case, as soon as I contacted the administrator, the problem was corrected. I am just starting to load pictures. I am very thankful for this post as it is gratifying to see my garden listings all laid out nice and neat. I am making good use of the 'Wish List' as well. I am afraid my wish list will grow bigger than my rose listings very soon indeed!

On another note: if one cannot load a rose list until 24 hours after adding the garden, the user should be notified of this so as to prevent all the frustration. It seems to me that it is important to make this an easy process if we want people to list their roses. I think I will mention this to the administrator.

Absolutely report all problems! The garden listings should purr. I can do anything I want with my garden listing, edit, update and such. All you computer savvy users already know that a public site as complex as HMF has lots of components. Stuff happens.

If you go to MY HMF and sign in and if you can't edit MY MEMBERSHIP or MY GARDEN, something is wrong. Report what you wanted to do and what happened instead using the REPORT WEBSITE ERROR tab. Unlike most sites (my bank immediately comes to mind), a real human who can fix things will respond.

Okay, I've put my garden, Catsrose, on and it all come up okay for me, but will someone please check it.
Note: I Uploaded and Appended from a text file. HMF had trouble with apostrophes ('), so I had to redo them: Paul's Himalayan Musk as Pauls and Perle d'Or as Perle d Or. I'm on a Mac or maybe I chose the wrong kind of text???

I use a Mac, too. This isn't a Mac issue. Punctuation and all diacritical markings cause software problems. The rose name matching software knows how to compare text names, but it doesn't know how to handle all possible languages, punctuation and diacritical markings, little things like ČervenKÅíÂ. But you shouldn't have to redo anything. You can manually add those few names to your updated list or search for them using the second pass at the list.

Since I update a number of plant lists on HMF, I use a free text editor call TextWrangler to make my lists. It has a features like "show invisibles" and "zap gremlins" that removes non-ASCII characters and other things that confound software. If you're not going to be adding lots of rose names, you'll never need it.

Thanks, berndoodle. The TextWrangler is good to know about regardless. I'll probably update twice a year, 12-50 roses at a time, depending on the economy.

Wow, I am so enjoying this. I didn't even realize that you could search by gardens. Thorn Grower, you'd never know your garden is small. Your roses are so big and gorgeous. Melva, Can you tell me about your Morey's Pink China. How big does it get?

Sherryocala's Garden is up. Whew! Once I got in the right place it worked fine. It was hard to find "Plant List". I just kept clicking on things. I think once you name your garden if you go back into "edit garden" and then click on the garden name, you'll find the "Plant List" tab. But I guess you figured it out. I couldn't find it and just stared at the blank "My Garden" page for a long time, thinking "Why me?". I'm not very intuitive about these things.

NOW I can go admire everyone's gardens.

Last night before being dragged off to bed by DH I looked at Sue's, Anita's, Eric's and Jeri's gardens. The pictures that were there were wonderful, but the really surprising thing was how it made me feel to "see" all the different roses (via the the listings) that each was growing. It was almost like walking through the garden. It was a really neat connection. Some were ones that I grow which made me want to email to see how they were doing! Plus there were many that I had never heard of that I want to look into further.

This is really a wonderful asset that allows us to browse through photos and gardens whenever we want to. I never realized there were so many gardens on HMF. It's really fantastic. I'm looking forward to taking more tours tonight and maybe every night!

Almost none of the photos that show up under my garden's listing are actually from my home - they are mostly the Sacramento Historic Rose Garden, along with some unusual roses that I've seen in my travels. One of these days I'll post some of my own garden. One of my guests this year, who only knew me through the cemetery and the internet, said that she was surprised to find that I had a real garden at home, since I rarely talk about it! I spend a lot less time working at home than I do volunteering in the cemetery or as a Master Gardener, that's for sure.

HMF is such a great site. Thank you to all that help keep it going. The recent change to include the clematis side of the house was most welcome. It makes adding clematis photos much simpler.
