New Flowerpots (Ideas Welcome)

Hi everyone,

I bought these yesterday at the Dollar General. For the large container in the back, I want to put my Datura wrightii seedlings (I'm planning on WSing them). The hanging containers I want to do a mixed planting. I'm ordering these seeds from Summer Hill and I would like to hear your thoughts on which would look good together. Ones I bought downtown or got in a trade I'll note.

Laurentia "Starshine Blue"

Asarina "Mix Climbing Snapdragon" (red and blue)

Dahlberg Daisy (bright sunshine yellow)

Forget Me Nots (from a trade and also bought a pack downtown).

Phlox "Beauty Dwarf Mixed Colors"

I think the Laurentia and the Dahlberg Daisy would look nice together. What are your thoughts?

Anyways, here are the pots. The hanging ones are 10 or 10 and a half inch.

Sounds good, I haven't container garden in quite sometime. Though my only recommendation is to make sure to put some rock at the bottom of your container. Not all probably would agree with me on that one. Though I find that it helps with drainage, root rot, and the potting mix getting to compound on the bottom. ;)

Since the daisy and the laurentia are both kinda bushy and are mounding form flowers, you may want to consider pairing the laurentia with the phlox, as that might give more height while the laurentia spills around it. I grew laurentia last year (indoor sown), and it flowered very late for me, like August, but they weren't hybrid seeds. The form was definitely a mound and as unbelievable as it may sound, just 1 plant filled up my 8" clay pot and spilled a little over the edge. Not sure if laurentia is good candidate for WS, as most of the info. I found has listed a long lead time to get to 4" pot size, like 10-12 weeks.

Maybe pair the daisy with the forget me nots? Just my 2 cents..

I was going to say panels, too. I don't see white being that great with the cream and I think the stainless might fight the wonderful copper...Unless you maybe include some stainless accents in your backsplash, maybe also on your hood, to tie things together. Have you chosen a range? You could go for some color or cream if you went with BlueStar or LaCanche with color choices...Maybe they have copper?

Hello everyone, I wish I could b as handy with computer and posting pics as you guys all are. This is so very useful and helpful. I am a very visual person. @Autumn, you have great ideas, about placing the DW and sink on outside wall. I appreciate your advice re protecting the work triangle. @mammag...your comments and input are valuable indeed...I am open to a prep sink, even though I have never used had or used one. Prepping on the is.and and facing dining/living room is great and what i am used. My current set up leaves me prepping both on island which has no sink, as well as on the counter between stove and sink. When one space gets too crowded, I use the other space. This is not bad, but can be improved. By the way, the architect, is awesome, and suggested 2 islands...so yeah, he can be congratulated (: @benjesbride..Thank you so much for th visual. I wish I knew how to do that! It's So much easier to understand and to review your thoughts. I love the idea of a pocket door. But am wondering how it will work if I put the stove on that side of the kitchen..I like the fridge on that side though as it's closer to hall which leads to the pantry. I notice u didn't put cabinets over the sink. Mayb I can open up that area, and this will let me see out the front window. !? Keep the comments and ideas coming. maybe just mix in a few shovel's worth of sand Sand needs to make up more than half of a planting soil before it starts to affect aeration and drainage. So to produce such effects the existing sand content of a soil has to be augmented with enough additional sand to end up with such a final percentage of sand. Otherwise amending of individual planting holes so that a pocket of different soil texture is created within a larger area can often have adverse effects on recently planted stock due to how movement of water into and out of the amended hole is affected by the involved textural differences. This can result in slowed growth, sometimes even failures. With this phenomenon not being generally noticed due to plants growing away normally once they have rooted beyond the amended hole, into the zone of unmodified soil around the hole that they should have been planted in direct contact with in the first place.

Carolyn, thanks! I'll put something in them to make them heavier. It can get very windy where I live.

SWB, the phlox gets 8 to 10 inches high and the forget-me-nots get 1-2 feet! The daisy grows to 12 inches. The bright yellow of the daisy with the bright blue of the forget-me-nots would look very pretty. I also have a pack of Ageratum "Blue Mink" seeds I bought at the Dollar General and it only gets 10-12 inches. I think it would look good with the phlox too. Oh the many possibilites of gardening :).

Dummy me, I was trying to straighten one of the hangers yesterday and I broke it :( . You can see how the hangers kinda curve. Still, at least the pot isn't broke :) .

i'm not sure about putting rocks into somthing that could be blown around plus it makes them heavy to lift and move. i have used styrofoam popcorn type packing material as drainage in big pots that needed to be lighter (not for edibles). for wind i would use a pliers to close the hooks or wire to secure them.
