Can you ID this bright magenta? flower for me?

I found this plant growing at my lattace backdrop recently and I don't know it's name. I am thinking it is a perennial or a definite reseeder. The plants only get dappled sun. If I bought something and planted it there that must be the type of light it requires. There are several plants now blooming in a row with about 6"- 8" of space between. I don't know the proper term, but the leaves go north and south and east and west (across from each other) up the stem which is only 1/16"-1/8" wide. Their height is approx.8"-10". It looks like it is producing new shoots where the leaf meets the stem.

My guess would be a Silene, possibly S. virginica.

Thank you for your reply coolplantsguy. I did a search on your suggestion, but nothing looked like my plant, nor did the description match. I did find a reference to campion, and rose campion rang a bell, but when I brought up a photo it is definitely not RC.

Hi Philip, I hope you can get this plant, is different. I didn't know it would be a big bloomer, thats fantastic. This plant and the other large one have be drastically cut. Guy who had them, I can see big cuts all the way up to the trunk. Many times on both. Obviously was trying to keep them from growing outward. Yes the white red, as Bill named it Gardena is a outward growing one. Right now I have it at the edge of my patio. It may have to go out into the yard and bloom!!! Hope you can get a cutting. If not, eventually I can send you one. My cuttings are still there, some pumped up tips. no leaves yet, little discouraged. over a couple months on some. I have one that looked to me to be growing, cat knocked it over, took it out..thought for sure this one was growing roots. nothing! that one kind of took me down. Karen

Great place to look for plants. I live north of Nayarit, in Sinaloa and always love to visit Nayarit jungles and mountains and beaches, of course. Never been to Chacala, though. This plant is fairly common in here also, not sure about the name, we call it "manzanita", also, jeje. Believe itÂ´s poisonous.

Yes, most of us post pictures from Photobucket.com. You open the free account, upload your pictures there and then copy the HTML code (third one down) that is under the picture. Paste that code into the the message box and your photo appears when you preview the message. Also if you scroll all the way down on the Texas Gallery page there are instructions for posting pictures without the benefit of a photo sharing site. I don't know how to do it, except I know you have to reduce the photo quite a bit. We are interested in seeing the picture of the plant you saw and will be watching for a photo.

Thunbergia grandiflora (Bengal clockvine) is a vine, opposite leaves, triangular or ovate, leaves are large, (larger than flower) up to 20 cm width up to 6 cm. Flower blue to mauve sometimes also white 8 cm across and 4 cm long tube, that is pale yellow inside, flower can be axilar but usually in racemes. whileThunbergia erecta (Bush clockvine) is a herbaceous perennial, woody, can also be a sprawling shrub, but not a vine. leaves ovate-elliptic small, (smaller than flower) Length is up to 3 cm and width is up to 2 cm. Flowers tubular 4-6 cm across, rich purple with a yellow throat, there is also a white-flowering form. Both of this Thunbergia are completely different, and not so difficult to ID.

I've always known it as "Catchfly". Is the stem slightly sticky? It showed up in my garden on it's own, and reseeds easily. It's very easy to remove, and is dainty enough that it doesn't overwhelm anything. I just let it do its thing!

That may be it! The "Catchfly" is Viscaria vulgaris, a close relative of Silene.

This is a pic of silene schafta. Do you think this is it? Coolplantsguy mentioned this plant name and I think he may be right.

Yes, I believe it is Catchfly. I checked out this forum on my lunch break but did not have time to respond. I checked out each suggestion, but I could not find anything that came close to the color of my flowers until I searched Catchfly.

Thank you all very much for trying to ID this plant for me.

I have no idea where it came from, but I hope it likes it here. I will try and save seeds, and then put them in a sunnier location.

By the way, I really prefer the name 'silene'. Could they not have found a more pleasant sounding name than 'Viscaria vulgaris'?

I so much appreciate the help, and greatly enjoy the photos on the GardenWeb forums. Jane

The more common name in North America for viscaria vulgaris is Lychnis viscaria. Do a google search under that name.

ontnative -- you're right -- I'm not sure why I didn't catch that. However, now I don't think that the plant pictured is Lychnis viscaria (syn. Viscaria vulgaris, as I'm fairly certain is does not have foliage like that.

I'm not there to see the plant in person, but I still think "coolplantsguy"'s suggestion of silene schafta is most likely.
