Bark Stripping

Last winter, I started to see bark stripped from dead limbs and trees in my woods. But since they were dead I didn't worry about it...figured it might be a part of the natural oder, or deer rubbing their antlers or something. At any rate, the live trees were not affected. Until yesterday, when I noticed this sycamore with the same issue, and definitely alive (although it was stressed last summer and hasn't leafed out as fully as it probably would). Can anyone help me with the cause of this? Thanks in advance for the assistance!

I'm getting the vibe that this is so obvious that no one wants to bother answering... =)

I guess it's just probably squirrels.

Isn't this a sycamore? Isn't bark shedding what they do?

I think the branches were alive. I don't know that I'd call them twigs. Some of them are up to 8 feet long. There are approximately 20 stripped branches now that I look. Also, the tree is more like 35 - 40 feet tall. I think it's 20 years old. I agree that it shouldn't hurt the tree too much, but I'm jsut wondering what I should do. Do I need to prune off all those branches? What a pain. I would definitely require a ladder or some tree climbing. Would you guys try to reduce the chances that the animal will do this to another 20 branches next time? If so how? Thanks.

how high is that second pic ... so it was attacked low and high???? ... weird .... i have never seen a squirrel do that type of damage in my MI ... but i dont know if mine are those listed above .. probably not ... something wrong with the second pic ... almost looks like human damage ... ????? do you see any teeth marks ... or claw marks ... ken

Maybe, maybe not. Depends on the weather, whether properly planted, it likes that spot, whether that 20% of the bark encircles at least half the trunk, etc. Generalities only possible with a general question with no pix.

Perhaps that's all it is...but this is localized in this one section only, and the strip is maybe 24-28" long. It isn't that obvious from the picture, but that's green tender bark exposed. That doesn't sound like normal bark shedding, does it?...now I'm second guessing myself.
