Bark stripped from young Ivory Silk Lilac tree - Can it live?

Last fall I planted a dormant Ivory Silk lilac tree, about 5 feet tall. This spring it rewarded me with nice new leaves but I wasn't fast enough protecting it from deer. They ate half the foliage. I put netting around the surviving leaves and thought, hah! The tree will make it after all. Then to my horror, I noticed the other day about a foot of the bark stripped away below the line of netting. My guess is a buck did it with his antlers. Two questions: Is a tree that's lost about 20% of its bark likely to recover and will new branches form next year where the deer browsed away the new shoots?
